Steelers add a familiar face in placekicker Matthew Wright

The Pittsburgh Steelers are a team still building their offseason roster, and one of the moves many didn’t see coming was them signing a placekicker. Nonetheless, that’s exactly what the team did Wednesday when they announced they are bringing back a familiar face in Matthew Wright.

This per the Steelers official Twitter/X account:

Wright was picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Steelers in 2019, and played in the XFL after failing to make an NFL roster.

On November 30, 2020, Wright was re-signed by the Steelers to their practice squad. He was elevated to the active roster on December 7, December 26, and January 2, 2021, for the team’s weeks 13, 16, and 17 games against the Washington Football Team, Indianapolis Colts, and Cleveland Browns, and reverted to the practice squad after each game. Wright was two-of-two on extra points against Washington, and made his first career field goal from 37 yards out. Wright finished the season having made all four of his field goal attempts, including a long of 46 yards, and all seven extra point attempts. On January 18, 2021, following the season, Wright’s practice squad contract with the team expired.

After that first stint with the Steelers Wright played for the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots, and most recently the Carolina Panthers.

The Steelers bringing in Wright likely means the team is wanting to not over-work Pro Bowl kicker Chris Boswell this offseason and throughout training camp. It’s a familiar situation for Wright, who has bounced around the league from practice squad to practice squad looking for a home.

For now, that home is in Pittsburgh.
