Steelers 7-Round Mock Draft 2.0: Post-Free Agency

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been busy. Amidst a hectic start to the new league year, Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan have completely overhauled some major positions like Quarterback and Wide Receiver. They also have largely ignored areas of direct need so far this offseason, such as at Center and Offensive Tackle, and many Steelers fans are starting to sweat the lack of additions in those areas.

The good news? There’s still a lot of time left to round out the roster with capable players, even at positions where the need is great. Plenty of Free Agent options are still unsigned as April draws closer. The Draft is a little over a month away, and more cuts will be made once Rookies are added to rosters.

Speaking of the Draft and those Rookies, more and more details about the Steelers interest in certain players and positions are coming out by the day with Pro Days and Top 30 visits in full swing. What direction will the team go come April 25th? Let’s take a look in my 2nd Steelers 7-Round Mock Draft of the offseason. In this draft scenario, the Steelers get aggressive in adding impact players to the roster.

TRADE! Pittsburgh sends picks 20 & 195 to the Chiefs for picks 32 & 64.

ROUND 1, PICK 32
ZACH FRAZIER | OC | WEST VIRGINIA

There’s a chance all the tantalizing 1st Round OT’s are gone by the time the Steelers pick at 20, and there’s no guarantee fan favorite Center prospect Jackson Powers-Johnson is there either. With the team’s current list of needs, adding picks should be a priority. In KC, the Steelers find a willing partner looking to move up and have their pick of the 2nd-tier WRs, so Pittsburgh gladly moves back, adds another 2nd Round pick, and then uses the final selection of the Round 1 to snag their favorite Center in the class who likely won’t be there when their turn comes around again.

ROUND 2, PICK 51
ROMAN WILSON | WR | MICHIGAN

The Steelers might as well hold up a sign that says, “We want Wilson” after the dynamic receiver earned much of Mike Tomlin’s attention at the Senior Bowl, and now met with the team brass before taking the field for his well-attended Pro-Day. With Diontae Johnson now a member of the Carolina Panthers, Pittsburgh needs a savvy separator and explosive weapon opposite George Pickens. Wilson is that type of player.

ROUND 2, PICK 64 (FROM CHIEFS)
PATRICK PAUL | OT | HOUSTON

The Steelers use their additional 2nd Rounder from their trade-back with KC to snag a massive, athletic OT prospect with tons of upside. Paul is raw as a technician, but he has elite physical traits that will be very attractive to teams on Day 2. With some coaching, Patrick Paul can become a really good player at the NFL level.

TRADE! Pittsburgh sends picks 84 & 119 to the Bears for pick 75.

ROUND 3, PICK 75
MAASON SMITH | DT | LSU

Omar Khan is at it again, this time trading up with the Bears, who currently only have 4 selections in this Draft, to nab a powerful DT prospect who just looks like a Steeler. Smith has ideal length and size for what the Steelers value on the interior of the defense. This time last year, Smith was being hyped as a potential 1st Round pick in 2024, but an underwhelming 2023 season statistically hampered his stock a little. With his athletic upside, though, pairing Smith with Cam Heyward and dynamic 2nd-year DT Keeanu Benton could set the Steelers up well for the future at the position.

TRADE! Pittsburgh sends pick 98 to the Vikings for picks 108 & 157

ROUND 4, PICK 108
D.J. JAMES | CB | AUBURN

After sending picks 84 & 119 to the Bears to move up for Maason Smith, the Steelers find themselves without a 4th, 5th, and 7th Round pick in this scenario. I don’t see them being satisfied with that type of situation with as much as this team values Draft picks, so Omar Khan again does some wheeling and dealing to gain both a 4th and 5th Rounder. The Vikings, who have no 2nd or 3rd Rd. picks after their trade with the Texans to acquire pick 23 overall, are willing trade partners with Pittsburgh to move up for a player they like on Day 2. The Steelers take advantage and use their newly acquired 4th Rounder to add a versatile Corner prospect in James, who has experience on the outside and in the slot, where he projects to play most of his snaps in the NFL due to his thinner frame.

ROUND 5, PICK 157 (FROM VIKINGS)
JAYLAN FORD | ILB | TEXAS

Pittsburgh uses the 5th Rounder acquired in the trade back with Minnesota to select an experienced ILB in Ford. The former Longhorn isn’t the most dynamic athlete or the most instinctive player, but he has good size and can be a tackling machine in the middle of the field if he doesn’t have to be “the guy”. With Patrick Queen and Elandon Roberts slated to run the show at ILB in 2024, Ford would have a great chance to learn and develop in a reserve role and on Special Teams.

ROUND 6, PICK 178
MALIK MUSTAPHA | SAF | WAKE FOREST

Mustapha is a physical, compact box Safety who displays elite tackling technique and impressive recognition in run support. Best suited as an in-the-box Strong Safety at the next level, Mustapha can contribute immediately on Special Teams with the potential to develop into a solid defender at the next level.

A lot of maneuvering for Omar Khan and company in this Mock Draft scenario, but if the Steelers want to maximize the Draft to address current and future needs, they will have to get creative to add dynamic players on both sides of the ball.
