Running back Godwin Igwebuike active for his first game with the Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers are now less than 90 minutes away from kickoff in Week 7 of the 2023 NFL season. Coming out of their bye week, the Steelers head to Los Angeles to take on the Rams in a late afternoon matchup.
As is always the case, 90 minutes before kickoff is when teams must announce their inactive list for the upcoming game. With 48 players active for each team, the number of players on the inactive list depends on if a team makes any practice squad elevations. With the Steelers not elevating any practice squad players on Saturday, they did reduce their active roster by placing Pat Freiermuth on the Reserve/Injured List (IR) and releasing Gunner Olszewski while bringing back Diontae Johnson from IR. Only having 52 players on the roster, the Steelers only have four inactives. The Rams elevated one player from the practice squad and placed another on IR so their list consists of five players.
New to the 2023 season is a modified return of the “third quarterback rule.” Every NFL team who has a third quarterback on their 53-man roster will include him on their inactive list, but he is designated as a third quarterback and is therefore in uniform in case of injury to the two players ahead of him on the depth chart. But if one of the players is deemed healthy enough to return, the third quarterback goes back to their role on the sideline.
Here are the seven players inactive for the Pittsburgh Steelers in their Week 7 matchup against the Rams according to Steelers.com.
Steelers Inactives
No. 2 QB Mason Rudolph (3rd QB)
No. 21 CB Darius Rush
No. 60 OT Dylan Cook
No. 96 NT Breiden Fehoko
Mason Rudolph is on the list as the Steelers third quarterback and will be in uniform which is technically an upgrade from last season. Joining Rudolph back on the inactive list is tackle Dylan Cook who was a healthy scratch the first three games of the season but did receive a helmet the last two games due to other injuries.
The other two players who are inactive for the Steelers consist of cornerback Darius Rush who just joined the Steelers this week. Also, defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko is inactive with the return of DeMarvin Leal who missed the Steelers last game.
With these two players being inactive, this means running back Godwin Igwebuike is getting his first helmet with the black and gold after joining the team ahead of Week 3. While many believed Igwebuike would be on the chopping block with the return to practice of Anthony McFarland this week, the Steelers did not bring McFarland off of IR and are giving Igwebuike his first helmet of the season.
As for the Rams inactive list, it can be seen below.
Rams Inactives
No. 31 OLB Nick Hampton
No. 33 RB Myles Gaskin
No. 52 DL Larrell Murchison
No. 57 OL Zach Thomas
No. 71 OT Warren McClendon
