Roman Wilson inactive again in Week 3 despite no injury status

The Pittsburgh Steelers are now less than 90 minutes away from their kickoff of their home opener in Week 3 of the 2024 NFL season. Hosting the Los Angeles Chargers, the Steelers had their first two contests of the season on the road. Even though Steelers Nation represented well in both contests, there is nothing like playing in front of the faithful fans at Acrisure Stadium..

As is always the case, 90 minutes before kickoff is when teams must announce their inactive list for the upcoming game. With 48 players active for each team, the number of players on the inactive list depends on if a team makes any practice squad elevations. With the Steelers elevating two players on Saturday but also placing 2024 first round draft pick Troy Fautanu on IR, their inactive list is six players. As for the Chargers, they have six players due to their practice squad elevations.

Keep in mind that last season implemented a modified return of the “third quarterback rule.” Every NFL team who has a third quarterback on their 53-man roster may include him on their inactive list, but he can be designated as a third quarterback and is therefore in uniform in case of injury to the two players ahead of him on the depth chart. But if one of the players is deemed healthy enough to return, the third quarterback goes back to their role on the sideline.

Here are the six players inactive for the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3 against the Chargers according to Steelers.com.

Steelers Inactives

No. 3 QB Russell Wilson (3rd QB)
No. 10 WR Roman Wilson
No. 21 CB Darius Rush
No. 38 FS Terrell Edmunds
No. 73 OG Isaac Seumalo
No. 81 TE MyCole Pruitt

Two players who had already been ruled out for the Steelers coming into the game were guard Isaac Seumalo and tight end MyCole Pruitt. Unlike Week 1 when he was ruled out on Tuesday, Seumalo was ruled out on Friday for the second straight week. Although he has not officially practice, Seumalo has been stretching with the team and appears to be approaching a return. As for MyCole Pruitt, his knee injury had him miss practice all week but at least was not to the degree where he landed on the Reserve/Injured List (IR). The Steelers signed Rodney Williams to the 53-man roster earlier in the week.

Another player who had missed the previous two games due to injury is Roman Wilson. After being limited with his ankle injury on Wednesday, Roman Wilson was a full participant on Thursday and Friday and had no injury status for Week 3. Despite being cleared to play, Roman Wilson will have to wait at least another week to make his NFL debut as he is a healthy scratch against his former college coach Jim Harbaugh. The Steelers will have only four wide receivers available.

An ongoing story for the three weeks of the NFL season so far has been the status of quarterback Russell Wilson. Once again limited all week, Wilson is the emergency quarterback on the inactive list for the third-straight game and can only enter the game if both other quarterbacks are out due to injury.

Two players inactive for the Steelers the first two weeks this season were defensive tackle Dean Lowry and safety Jalen Elliott. For both players, it had merely been a numbers game with how many players they already have at the position. But for Week 3, both players are active and looking to see their first action of the season.

The other healthy players who are inactive are safety Terrell Edmunds, for the second-straight week, and cornerback Darius Rush. Edmunds rejoined the Steelers from the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad following Week 1 but has not broken into the game-day lineup. As for Rush, he was active for the Steelers the first two weeks of the season but played no defensive snaps and a total of 19 special teams snaps.

As for the Chargers inactive list, they can be seen below. Quarterback Justin Herbert is active but the Chargers chose to have all three quarterbacks available if needed. Wide receiver Josh Palmer is inactive.

Chargers Inactives

No. 25 LB Junior Colson
No. 29 CB Tarheeb Still
No. 30 RB Kimani Vidal
