REPORT: Steelers punter Cameron Johnston lost for the season with knee injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers entered their Week 1 game vs. the Atlanta Falcons with a relatively clean bill of health, but unfortunately that bill of health didn’t get them through to Week 2.

During the 18-10 win over the Falcons the Steelers lost punter Cameron Johnston to a leg injury when Miles Killebrew blocked a defender into Johnston’s kicking leg as it was landing on the ground. After the game head coach Mike Tomlin called the Johnston injury a “serious injury”.

On top of that, Tomlin added it was, “a shame for him” and continued how Johnston is “An absolute stud, not just his talents, but his approach to business.” Further evaluation is necessary and Tomlin said he’ll update the injury on Tuesday during his weekly press conference.

Monday is when reports started circulating regarding the severity of Johnston’s injury, and it is unfortunately the season-ending variety. This from Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network:

This should not shock fans of the team, but now comes the challenge of finding a new punter. The Steelers will be bringing in punters for workouts this week to try and find someone who could fit the bill for the remainder of the regular season. Some familiar names are on the open market:

  • Pressley Harvin III
  • Jordan Berry
  • Brad Wing

It will be interesting to see what the Steelers do in this regard, but learning of the severity of the Johnston injury is still a tough pill to swallow.
