REPORT: Bears and another team inquire about trading for Mike Tomlin

The Pittsburgh Steelers season ended in a dud, losing five straight games to call it a year. To cap off the horrid losing streak was an absolute drubbing to arch rival Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card Round of the AFC Playoffs. Despite the team’s skid to end the season, head coach Mike Tomlin remains a hot commodity on the open market.

It has long been thought the only way the Steelers would part ways with Tomlin would be if he chooses to step away, or a potential trade to another team. However, when Mike Tomlin signed a new contract extension prior to the 2024 season it included a no-trade clause. In other words, the only way Tomlin could be traded is if he agreed to being traded and waived said no-trade clause.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, at least two teams have called the Steelers about a potential trade for Tomlin.

As Schefter stated in his post above, the Steelers have rebuffed all of the inquiries, and the second team to inquire isn’t known at this time.

The Steelers could be looking at starting fresh, but the no-trade clause in Tomlin’s contract will certainly make things near impossible if Tomlin wants to stay in Pittsburgh. The Steelers reportedly are giving Tomlin roughly $16 million dollars a year with his new contract, and that is an amount the organization is not willing to “eat” if they were to tell Tomlin his services are no longer needed.

This situation continues to be intriguing on many levels, but likely won’t amount to much with the aforementioned situation with Tomlin’s contract status. However, Steelers fans have been waiting for the changes which Tomlin spoke about in his season-ending press conference, and those have yet to be made heading into the weekend.

So be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for the rest of what could be a very tumultuous offseason.
