Remaining free agent options for the Steelers at center before the 2024 NFL Draft

The 2024 NFL Draft is quickly approaching, and fans of all 32 teams are looking at their favorite team’s roster and seeing what gaps might be filled during the 3-day selection process. However, an important factor to consider as well is what gaps might be filled before the draft even begins at the end of the month.

For the Pittsburgh Steelers, there are holes on the roster, but none loom as large than center. There are players who have experience at center, Nate Herbig and James Daniels, but that doesn’t mean they are centers by trade. While it is common knowledge the team is more than likely to add a center in the draft, who are the available players still on the market?

Below is the vast majority of the list of available free agents, according to Spotrac. Take a look at the players available, and their ages, below:

Cody Whitehair (Age: 31)

Connor Williams (Age: 27)

Brian Allen (Age: 28)

Mason Cole (Age: 28)

Lucas Patrick (Age: 30)

Tyler Shatley (Age: 32)

Scott Quessenberry (Age: 29)

Conner McGovern (Age: 30)

J.C. Hassenauer (Age: 29)

There are names on the list which many Steelers fans are familiar with throughout this offseason. Brian Allen might have been the most talked about free agent center, with Connor Williams being the most high-profile center who won’t be available to play anytime soon after injuring his knee in December.

Then there are two players who have direct ties to the Steelers. Mason Cole, who was released early in the offseason, and J.C. Hassenauer.

Hassenauer has been a back-up in Pittsburgh before, and could be a good stop-gap for the team as the new center gets acclimated to life in the NFL and as the primary center for the offensive line. But would Mason Cole consider a return? If no other team comes calling, could the Steelers request a one-year deal for Cole? But would Cole sign that deal?

There are options still remaining, and the biggest question, in my opinion, is if the team will address the position before the draft, or wait to see how things play out in the draft.
