Rebuilding the Steelers: The Omar Khan And Andy Weidl Era

When Omar Khan and Andy Weidl assumed their roles as general manager and assistant general manager of the Pittsburgh Steelers, they didn’t rush to overhaul the roster. Instead, they adopted a calculated, methodical approach to reshaping the team. This isn’t merely a rebuild—it’s a redefinition of the Steelers’ recent identity. The Pittsburgh Steelers are not the team they want to be, but now they’re confronting who they’ve become.

At the heart of their philosophy lies a simple truth: the trenches matter. That hasn’t been the focus for quite some time—until now.

For years, the Steelers prioritized drafting skill players. Between 2014 and 2022, only 35% of their early-round picks targeted “box” players—offensive linemen, defensive linemen, and linebackers. That trend shifted dramatically under Khan and Weidl. In the 2023 and 2024 drafts, 80% of the team’s first four-round picks were “box” players. The selection of Darnell Washington, a tight end with offensive tackle capabilities, further underscored this emphasis.

This shift has Weidl’s fingerprints all over it, reflecting his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles built their recent success on dominance in the trenches, boasting an elite offensive line and a relentless defensive front seven. It took years to build their foundation that has propelled them to the NFL’s top-ranked defense, the second-ranked rushing offense, and a balanced system that thrives under pressure. Teams that dominate in today’s NFL share one critical trait: control of the line of scrimmage.

The Steelers aspire to replicate this model—running the ball effectively, playing tough defense, and pivoting seamlessly to the passing game when necessary. Head coach Mike Tomlin has made no secret of his preference for this style, particularly in the absence of a Hall of Fame quarterback under center. However, execution has been a recurring challenge, tied directly to roster construction. I have been critical about the current philosophy but when I take a deeper look, its more about the players that have been acquired over the years. Coaching schemes and adjustments can only go so far when the roster lacks the “Jimmy’s and Joe’s” to execute the vision. Unlike the Eagles, who thrive on efficiency with elite personnel, the Steelers have struggled to consistently implement their blueprint.

Under Khan and Weidl, change is evident. The 2023 draft was a clear statement: Broderick Jones, Joey Porter Jr., Keeanu Benton, and Darnell Washington have already made significant impacts. Once again, Jones has shown the ability to improve as the season goes on, Porter Jr. is emerging as a legitimate CB1, Benton is making his presence felt on the defensive line despite playing out of position, and Washington continues to prove he’s a tight end in a tackle’s body.

The 2024 draft faced challenges, with injuries affecting top picks like Troy Fautanu and Roman Wilson. Yet, there are bright spots: Zach Frazier earned a spot on the PFWA’s All-Rookie Team, Payton Wilson looks like a defensive star in the making, and Mason McCormick has shown flashes of potential as a starter. Across two drafts, the Steelers may have secured up to 10 current or future starters, with eight of them playing in the “box.”

Rebuilding a storied franchise like the Steelers—holders of six Lombardi trophies and backed by a fanbase that demands excellence—is no easy task. Patience among fans has worn out, but Khan and Weidl aren’t chasing quick fixes. And remember, they’re only in their second year of this roster overhaul. They’re working to build a sustainable contender, designed to compete year after year.

As we approach another offseason, the Steelers face a critical task: continue fortifying the trenches, adding depth, and finding playmakers. While the team still lacks a franchise quarterback, the foundation is being laid for the day that player puts on the Black and Gold. The road ahead will test the patience of Steelers Nation, but the vision is clear: a complete team, built to last.

For Steelers fans, the future might feel uncertain, but the groundwork being laid suggests brighter days ahead.
