Players to watch in Steelers vs. Bills Preseason Week 2
The Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills will square off at Acrisure Stadium in Preseason Week 2, and while some fans might think there is nothing to watch in these games, there are plenty of players to keep an eye on. Keeping in mind this is still preseason, and a very small sample size for these players, here is a list of players Dave Schofield and I are looking forward to watching in the game.
Take a look at the lists below, and let us know who you are excited to watch in the game Saturday night in the comments below:
Jeff Hartman
Russell Wilson
Why: This should be an obvious answer, but getting to see what Wilson can do in a Steelers uniform for the first time will absolutely be something to watch. It might just be for a couple drives, but this will give fans their first taste of what Wilson will bring to the team which might be different, and/or better, than what Fields can do with the starters. Wilson doesn’t have anything to prove at this stage of his career, but he has to feel the heat Fields has been putting on during training camp as he was more spectator than participant. A good performance would certainly help ease the concerns of the fan base to the theory of if you have two quarterbacks, you have none.
Justin Fields
Why: Last week it was all about Fields performing well enough in his debut with the Steelers, and I’m sure there were nerves attached to that performance. How does he do in Week 2, and how much time do the Steelers give him with the starters? Who am I kidding? The thing Steelers fans will be watching will be if Fields puts the ball on the turf or not. Hopefully Fields plays a clean brand of football, but also shows the play making skills which intrigued the Steelers enough to trade for him in the first place.
Zach Frazier
Why: Could Frazier get the start? If I’m a betting man I assume he gets the start. What’s crazy is if he plays well this could be the first of a long line of starts for the rookie center. I’m not about to call him the next Maurkice Pouncey, but the Steelers are certainly hoping they found their next rock at center who can anchor the line for a decade, plus some. It all depends on how Frazier performs with this opportunity, and even if Nate Herbig plays I would assume Frazier will get plenty of time to prove himself otherwise.
Wide Receivers Not Named George Pickens
Why: I used this very topic last week, and I will use it again. I want to see if someone other than George Pickens can make some splash plays in the offense. Calvin Austin III? Scotty Miller? I honestly don’t care who it is, but can someone stand out among the group? I am warming up to the thought of Van Jefferson being the team’s WR2, but who will be WR3? Maybe it’s Pat Freiermuth, and that’s okay by me. I just want someone else to show up and show out!
Beanie Bishop
Why: Bishop has had some ups and downs throughout training camp, but with recent injuries the spot light is shining bright on him once again to be a bright spot in the team’s secondary. I want to see Bishop succeed, but if I had to predict what will happen, it would be the Steelers bringing in a veteran free agent to at least be another option for the defense in case things don’t workout with the undrafted rookie free agent out of West Virginia. If he can lock down the position, that’s the best possible situation imaginable.
Dave Schofield
Broderick Jones
Why: Last week I wouldn’t have considered having Jones as someone to keep an eye on in the Steelers preseason game ahead of other candidates. But Jones was making some technical mistakes and relying on his athleticism too much for my liking last week. While I had written him off as the definite starter at one of the positions and exactly where he played would be up to others performances, I’m starting to change my tune. Jones has all the talent needed to thrive in the NFL, but sometimes I forget he doesn’t have a lot of experience even after last season.
Darnell Washington
Why: I had Washington on my list last week and I’ve kept him here once again. While he had a fantastic week blocking, Washington was only sent out one time for a pass. I’m keeping my eye on him to see if he is going to be utilized in that regard.
Payton Wilson
Why: Yet another player I had on my list last week, I thought Payton Wilson started off great and came down to earth as the game went on. Now that the initial excitement is over, I want to see what is more of the normal for Wilson in this contest.
Jeremiah Moon/Kyron Johnson
Why: With Markus Golden hanging it up only one week after being back with the Steelers, the fourth outside linebacker spot is one to note. I like what I’ve seen so far from both Moon and Johnson and want to see if either one of them continues to rise and separate as the next man on the depth chart.
Cory Trice
Why: Last week I was interested in seeing all the young cornerbacks. This time around, I’m interested to see Cory Trice specifically as he has stepped up with Donte Jackson not always being available.
Be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steeles as they prepare for the Bills in Week 2 of preseason action.
