Pittsburgh Steelers Top 5 Team Needs: Pre-Free Agency Edition

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in full offseason mode, and while the first item on their checklist is to round out their coaching staff, mainly an offensive coordinator, it is also important for the organization to start ranking their top team needs. Before going any further, realize my team needs don’t reflect those of the organizations. Also, these needs can absolutely change with any moves the team makes leading up to free agency, signing their own free agents, or when the new league year starts on March 13th.

These will be adjusted accordingly, but here are my Top 5 team needs heading into the offseason…

Steelers Team Needs

1a. Center

Center? A top team need? You bet. The reason is when the Steelers have had success, they’ve had a great center. There was the aberration of a 2009 season with Justin Hartwig, but it’s time for the Steelers to get away from stop-gap system and find their center for the next 10 years, or more. Doing so will solidify the offensive line, and provide any extra layer of protection for the quarterback, whoever that is in 2024.

1b. Offensive Tackle

Some might call this cheating, and to be honest as I wrote this article I hastily forgot one of the most important team needs on the roster. It happens, I’m human. Offensive tackle is a huge need, but I wonder if the Steelers will address it or continue to “ride it out” with Dan Moore Jr opposite Broderick Jones. Either way, this position is high on the list.

2. Cornerback

Levi Wallace is a free agent, and likely to be able to test the free agent waters. Patrick Peterson isn’t getting younger, and you need to pair a player with Joey Porter Jr. Could this be a veteran? It’s possible, but they’ll need to be adding to this room for both depth and quality starting experience next season.

3. Quarterback

I don’t expect Mitch Trubisky to be back next season, and Mason Rudolph has every right to test free agency. That leaves Kenny Pickett. While I don’t feel the Steelers should just move on from their 1st Round quarterback, they should be adding to the room this offseason. Our sources have said the organization is interested in looking into free agent signal callers, and I could also see them spending a mid-round pick on a quarterback. Have to do whatever you can to help bolster the position.

4. Wide Receiver

It might seem crazy to have wide receiver on this list, but with Allen Robinson a likely cap casualty, the cupboard got pretty bare, pretty quick. Calvin Austin III certainly has his moments, but finding a wide receiver who can truly compliment Diontae Johnson, George Pickens and the tight ends on the roster would be a best-case scenario.

5. Inside Linebacker

Another year, another year of putting inside linebacker on the team needs list. I liked the combination of Cole Holcomb and Kwon Alexander, but both are dealing with season-ending injuries and that makes me wonder if they’ll fully recover, Mike Tomlin didn’t seem overly optimistic about those prospects in his season-ending press conference. That means another offseason searching for answers on the inside of the defense.
