Pittsburgh Steelers QB situation remains status quo heading into Week 6
The Pittsburgh Steelers are coming off back-to-back losses to the Colts and Cowboys, and they are hoping they can find a win in Week 6 when they take yet another road trip, this time to Las Vegas, to play the 2-3 Raiders. Getting on the right track is paramount, but the question most fans want to know is who will be the quarterback when the team heads out to Vegas?
Mike Tomlin met with the media Tuesday, and wasn’t very clear on how the team is going to proceed with Russell Wilson openly stating to the NBC news crew he will be ready to play vs. the Raiders.
Tomlin reiterated in his opening remarks of the press conference how Russell Wilson is in a different place heading into Week 6 than he has this season, from a health perspective. For the first time this season, Wilson is scheduled to be a full participant in practice Wednesday.
While he returns to being a full participant, several questions need to be answered before he could even be considered a viable option for the Steelers. Questions like:
- Can he get through the session without any limitations?
- What is the quality of the work done?
- Is he ability to protect himself?
Nonetheless, Wilson is at the point of health where he can work on a Wednesday without restriction.
With all that said, Tomlin also said Wilson will get reps with 2nd team, as to not disrupt Justin Fields’s preparation for the Raiders with the starting offense.
Later in the press conference Tomlin was asked further about the quarterback situation, and Tomlin reiterated how there won’t be any decision made on the quarterback situation until Wilson can answer those previously mentioned questions on consecutive days, something which hasn’t been done yet. Therefore, Tomlin labeled this a hypothetical, and something he doesn’t have any interest in entertaining.
Of course, Tomlin also outlined the Steelers injuries as they prepare for the Raiders game on Sunday, and it wasn’t good.
The following players will be ruled OUT this week for their respective injuries:
- Nick Herbig (hamstring)
- DeMarvin Leal (stinger)
- Alex Highsmith (groin)
- Cordarrelle Patterson (ankle)
If that wasn’t disappointing enough, the following players were said to be DOUBTFUL with their respective injuries:
- Jaylen Warren (knee)
- MyCole Pruitt (knee)
- Damontae Kazee (ankle, which was injured in pre-game Sunday night)
On the good news front, Tomlin said Isaac Seumalo (pectoral) had no negative consequences after his first game of the season, and he will be managed appropriately heading into the upcoming week.
When it comes to injuries, this is a situation where the Steelers have been hit hard, especially at three positions, Offensive Line, Outside Linebacker and Running Back, and it doesn’t look like there will be much help on the horizon for those positions moving into the Week 6 game in Las Vegas.
