Opportunity awaits as the Steelers start to put together a plan for the 2024 NFL Draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers are a team who has made some drastic changes to their roster this offseason, but they still have work to be done. While some call it work to be done, Steelers General Manager (GM) Omar Khan sees it as an opportunity. Not just an opportunity, but a chance for the team to round out the roster prior to the 2024 NFL Draft.

Of course, if you ask any Steelers fan what position concerns them the most at this juncture, they’d say center. The Steelers don’t have a pure center on their roster right now, this after releasing Mason Cole earlier in the offseason. Nonetheless, Khan sees options, and opportunity, still available.

“All options are still on the table. There’s some players out there still that are free agents. There’s maybe some trade opportunities, and then that there’s a draft,” Khan said at the league owners meetings early last week. “But you know, we have Herbig around and as I mentioned to you guys in Indy, we have some offensive lineman to have some versatility but it’s a work in progress.”

The key is having that patient approach to address the issue.

“You just have to be patient,” Khan said. “I’m confident by the time we get to the start of the season, you will have the right 53 guys for us regardless of position, but you just have to be patient and understand that. When you lose one opportunity, it’s not the last opportunity. There’s going to be an opportunity to address it in other ways. So be patient, something’s going to happen.”

Center isn’t the only position which opportunity still exists heading into the month of April. Some would argue wide receiver, cornerback, offensive tackle and even inside linebacker could all be positions which need some fine-tuning before the real proverbial bullets start flying in the late summer at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

But while the Steelers still have time, and free agents are still available, time is not a constant commodity at their disposal. It’s fleeting, and with each day comes the risk of the team losing out on some of the few, very few, quality players still on the open market at positions of need.

With that said, Khan, along with Andy Weidl and Mike Tomlin, haven’t given fans a reason to doubt their ability to make the right decisions yet, so having faith will remain a priority this offseason. However, go into the NFL Draft with a glaring need like center, and you might see some of that faith of the fan base starting to wane a bit.
