Offensive keys to victory for the Steelers vs. the Ravens in Week 16
The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the midst of the 2024 regular season, and with it being the team’s latest game fans’ hopes remain high heading into the final stretch of the season. The hope is there is a winning performance on the horizon on Saturday in Week 16 when the team travels to play the Baltimore Ravens.
What exactly do the Steelers need to do to on offense to claim their eleventh victory of 2024? Let’s break it down…
Offense
Protect the Ball
It has been a long time since the Steelers had a game when they didn’t turn the ball over, and the unfortunate reality is the most recent turnovers have been costly.
Think about Russell Wilson’s costly interception to Marlon Humphrey in the second half of the Steelers vs. Ravens game earlier this season.
Think about Cordarrelle Patterson’s fumble vs. the Browns just a few weeks ago, and, of course, the Najee Harris fumble last week vs. the Eagles.
It’s these turnovers which need to be eliminated in a huge game like this. Time to keep it clean in the takeaway department.
Improve the Starts
The Steelers offensive starts have been bad, but I wasn’t sure how bad. I went back to the first quarter point totals since Russell Wilson has been the starting quarterback. In those eight games the Steelers have averaged 4 points in the first quarter. Not once has the team ever reached double-digit point totals in the opening quarter. The scripts for the games have been atrocious, and it’s time to see if this is just an ongoing trend, or if a change is coming.
Be Dynamic
The Ravens defense is vastly improved from when the two teams met earlier this season at Acrisure Stadium. Statistically the Baltimore pass defense is still one of the worst in the league, but their improved play started with the first game vs. the Steelers. Without George Pickens the offense has lacked those explosive plays of 15+ yards. They still have players capable, just have to get the job done. Time for the Steelers to get back to chunk plays and being dynamic, even if it means throwing to open up the run. Be dynamic.
I talk about this, and MUCH more on the “Let’s Ride”, and you can hear that podcast in the player below this article. In the meantime, be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the team as they gear up for game time!
