Steel Curtain Network: A Pittsburgh Steelers podcast

Offensive keys to victory for the Steelers vs. the Eagles in Week 15

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the midst of the 2024 regular season, and with it being the team’s latest game fans’ hopes remain high heading into the final stretch of the season. The hope is there is a winning performance on the horizon on Sunday in Week 15 when the team travels to play the Philadelphia Eagles.

What exactly do the Steelers need to do to on offense to claim their eleventh victory of 2024? Let’s break it down…

Offense

Start Fast

While this is the Steelers offensive keys to victory, it’s important to talk about the Eagles offense here for a bit. You thought the Steelers started slow, the Eagles are even worse.

Last week their win over the Carolina Panthers was the 10th game this season where they failed to score a point in the first quarter. To date, they have only tallied 10 points in the first quarter for the entire season.

If the Steelers can start fast, and the Eagles have their typical slow start, it could force them to alter their game plan. Therefore, the Steelers having a start like they did vs. Cincinnati would be a huge boost for their success in Week 15.

Run the Rock, Control the Clock

Let’s take a look at some numbers for the Eagles and Steelers, as it pertains to the running game.

  • PHI Run Defense: 105.8 yards per game (8th)
  • PIT Run Offense: 132.1 yards per game (9th)

The Steelers will want to establish the run in this game, and control the flow of the game. Last week vs. the Browns the Steelers didn’t win the time of possession battle, they actually tied, and that has been their MO this entire season. It’s time to get back to that philosophy vs. the Eagles. Sometimes the best defense is an offense which can keep the opposition on the sideline.

Chris Boswell Extra Points, not Chris Boswell Field Goals

When it comes to points per game, here is how these two team stack up:

  • PHI Defensive PPG: 18.0
  • PIT Offensive PPG: 24.8

In this game the key will be can the Steelers get Chris Boswell extra points, and not Chris Boswell field goals. Last week the offense did just that, with Boswell kicking three extra points and only two field goals. Putting up points will be vital, and success in the red-zone will be critical. The Eagles Red-Zone defense is 6th best in the NFL, allowing touchdowns on 48.7% of possessions in the red-zone. While I don’t feel this will be a shootout, the team who converts most in the red-zone likely will win.
