NFL Experts see the Steelers “stacking wins” in Week 3

The Pittsburgh Steelers are a tough team to predict after two weeks of play in the 2023 regular season. They got their doors blown off in a Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, but then rebound with an odd victory over the Cleveland Browns in Week 2 on Monday Night Football.

With the team preparing for the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 3, it is tough to predict which of these two 1-1 teams will leave Sunday Night Football with their second win of the season.

This is why we take a look at who the people who claim to be NFL “experts” think will win the game every week. Let’s’ take a look at some of the predictions being put out there…

Some panels of experts don’t do anything but click which team they think will win, and that is exactly what those at Sports Illustrated do. However,  five of the seven experts at Sports Illustrated like the Steelers to win back-to-back games.

As for those who like to provide some context to their picks, CBS Sports Pete Prisco is someone who like the Steelers to beat the Raiders on the road for the first time since 1995.

The Steelers won a game Monday night thanks to two defensive touchdowns, but the offense struggled for the second straight week. The Raiders ran into an ambush in Buffalo in losing to the Bills. Even though the Raiders are back home, I think the Steelers defense will be too much for the Raiders offense. The Pittsburgh front will be too much. The Steelers also show some life on offense.

Pick: Steelers 23, Raiders 20

Not everyone is on the Steelers to win in Vegas though, and that would include those experts at the Sporting News. They like the Raiders returning home in Week 3.

Raiders (-4) vs. Steelers
Win probability: 63.1%, Raiders

The Steelers bounced back from an ugly Week 1 performance against the 49ers to win a tight home game against the Browns. But that win took a season-ending injury to Chubb and two defensive scores, while the offense still looks rough. That might be the product of facing back-to-back standout defenses, but the model has slightly more trust in the Raiders in Las Vegas despite a Week 2 drubbing against the Bills.

It should be noted the NFL.com experts like the Steelers based on their full panel, but there was one expert who thought the Raiders were going to beat the Steelers and send the Pittsburgh fan base into a tailspin.

Why Gennaro is taking the Raiders: In Pittsburgh’s 26-22 win over Cleveland this past Monday night, the Steelers scored the first points of the game on an OLB pick-six and the last points of the game on an OLB pick-up-six. With all due respect to Alex Highsmith and T.J. Watt, that’s not happening in back-to-back weeks. So, where do Pittsburgh’s points come from this Sunday night? A sputtering offense that just put its leading receiver of the past three seasons on IR? In the Raiders’ home opener, I trust Josh Jacobs to get right against Pittsburgh’s last-ranked run defense more than I trust Kenny Pickett to get right against Las Vegas’ suspect secondary.

If you are someone who is looking for more in-depth coverage than just who they think will win, look no further than the experts at ESPN. Take a look at storylines, matchups and of course some predictions.

Storyline to watch: Beat the Raiders in the teams’ first meeting in Las Vegas and Kenny Pickett will be the first Steelers quarterback to win a game in the Raiders’ home stadium since … Neil O’Donnell back on Dec. 10, 1995 — 2½ years before Pickett was born. The Raiders have won four straight home games against the Steelers (2006, 2012, 2013, 2018) with four different QBs (Andrew Walter, Carson Palmer, Terrelle Pryor and Derek Carr) by the average score of 25-21, beating two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in each of those contests. Those games, though, were all in Oakland. — Paul Gutierrez

Matchup X factor: Pickett. The Steelers quarterback was bailed out by the defense in Week 2, but he has to be better for Pittsburgh to succeed going forward. Pickett has an 18.8 QBR, which ranks last of all qualifying quarterbacks. — Walder

Moody’s pick: Steelers 24, Raiders 21
Walder’s pick: Raiders 27, Steelers 16
FPI prediction: LV, 50.8% (by an average of 0.4 points)
