Mike Tomlin mum on QB change, doesn’t announce a starter vs. the Jets

The Pittsburgh Steelers are coming off a much needed Week 6 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, and are turning their attention to another home prime time game on Sunday night. This time, the opponent will be Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets in Week 7. But as Mike Tomlin met with media Tuesday, the majority of the talk wasn’t about the upcoming opponent, but individuals both within the Steelers and the Jets.

The biggest question swirling around the Steelers was the looming decision at quarterback. Would Tomlin make a switch and allow the now-healthy Russell Wilson the opportunity to quarterback the team? Or will he stick with the signal caller who got the team to 4-2, Justin Fields?

Despite reports suggesting Tomlin is planning on starting Russell Wilson, he didn’t do so in the press conference setting. During the question and answer portion of the press conference Tomlin was peppered with questions about the quarterback situation. Tomlin mentioned “knocking the rust off” for Wilson, but how for him to do that doesn’t necessarily require him to be playing in-game with the amount of experience he has in the league.

The Steelers head coach kept his cards close to the vest throughout the press conference, even when talking about who will receive the 1st team repetitions in practice.

When he was asked what Justin Fields may not have done to secure the starting role, Tomlin responded, “He’s been really good, we’ve been really good at times. Not to be confused with great. We have a player with talent who hasn’t had an opportunity to play, and we are going to explore those things.”

Tomlin was asked if there could be a scenario where the use both quarterbacks, and he said it absolutely could be. He even said it could have been a consideration last week in Las Vegas.

So, is this Russ vs. Russ, or Russ vs. Justin throughout practice this week? Tomlin said they plan on rolling the ball out and letting the players work. Even when asked about how the offense might change if Wilson is tabbed as the starter, a decision which won’t be made until closer to game time, Tomlin said that has yet to be seen, in other words keeping as much unknown for the Jets defense prior to their Week 7 showdown.

Tuesday morning it was also made known the Las Vegas Raiders were trading embattled veteran receiver Davante Adams to the New York Jets for a conditional 3rd round draft pick. Tomlin talked about how the Steelers were getting ready to prepare for Adams last week, in case he played for the Raiders in Week 6, but again as he is being traded to the Jets in Week 7. Tomlin was asked if the Steelers were interested in Adams via trade, and he quickly responded with, “It doesn’t matter.”

On top of those situations, Tomlin outlined several injuries, as he always does:

Rookie center Zach Frazier (ankle) was ruled OUT by Tomlin, and Ryan McCollum is set to start in Week 7 after filling in after Frazier went out in Vegas Sunday. Tomlin also said Frazier’s “week-to-week” label is fair, from his perspective.

The only other player Tomlin said could be ruled OUT this week is Nick Herbig (hamstring) who is slated to miss his second game Sunday after injuring his hamstring vs. the Dallas Cowboys two weeks ago.

In the good news category, the Steelers are “optimistic” to get players like Alex Highsmith (groin), Cordarrelle Patterson (ankle), MyCole Pruitt (knee), and Damontae Kazee (ankle) back at practice and get them some work early in the week. Tomlin said majority of those players are slated to get a limited amount of work at the top point of the week in hopes of seeing how they respond and their availability this Sunday night.

Two players who were injured during the Raiders game Sunday, Minkah Fitzpatrick (shoulder) and Donte Jackson (shoulder), were not mentioned by Tomlin and should be good-to-go this week.
