Mike Tomlin knows and acknowledges work still needs to be done

The NFL world turns its attention to the 2024 NFL Draft at the end of April, but there are still teams with work to do prior to the 3-day selection process. Teams who still have gaps on their current roster to fill, and the Pittsburgh Steelers would certainly fall into that category.

In the offseason Mike Tomlin is one of the head coaches who doesn’t speak much to the media. After his end-of-season press conference he doesn’t speak to the media at the NFL Scouting Combine. From there, the only times he fields questions are at the NFL meetings in Florida, as well as prior to the draft when he meets media with General Manager Omar Khan.

With the NFL world descended on Florida, Tomlin answered a myriad of questions from both local and national media, and many of them were centered around those aforementioned gaps on the current roster.

What about the center position?

What about wide receiver?

What about cornerback and safety?

Even after the Steelers reportedly acquired wide receiver Quez Watkins in free agency, the needs on the roster remain significant with just a few weeks before the draft. With every questions sent Tomlin’s way about a position of need, and even how they might utilize players on their current roster in different ways, the response was always the same.

We still have work to do.

Take Tomlin’s answer to whether Broderick Jones will be moved to left tackle this year, or remain at right tackle in 2024. This per Joe Rutter of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

The Steelers might not have been the free agent front-runners at positions like center, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t going to continue to do work up to the draft, and even after. Plenty of quality players remain on the open market at positions of need, but some of those wells are drying up quickly.

Will the team make more moves in the coming days/weeks leading up to the draft? Say what you want, but it seems the head coach is destined to continue to work in a fashion which is their own. Not on anyone else’s timeline, and not to exacerbate the team’s current salary cap situation. But you don’t have to be a head coach of an NFL team, or a front office executive to know the Steelers will have to make more moves prior to the start of the draft, if nothing more than to free them up during the draft process to take players and positions which best fit what they need in 2024, and beyond.
