Mike Tomlin continues to walk a fine line with Steelers QB situation

The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the few remaining 3-0 teams in the NFL as they prepare for a Week 4 showdown with the Colts in Indianapolis, and the same reoccurring question remains for Mike Tomlin during his Tuesday press conference.

Who will be the team’s quarterback this week?

As he has the previous three weeks, Tomlin continues to walk the fine line with the quarterback situation between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. While both media and fans clamor for Tomlin to name Fields the team’s starting quarterback, the head coach refuses to do so until Wilson is healthy and capable to play.

In other words, the Steelers don’t feel Wilson is at that point…again.

Tomlin stated Wilson won’t be a full participant in practice Wednesday, which, based on the Steelers’ current plan means Justin Fields is slated to be the starter for the fourth week this Sunday in Indianapolis. Could the plan change? As Tomlin had to reiterate repeatedly, the plan will remain the plan until Wilson is able to practice fully.

The past few weeks Wilson has practiced every day, but still not capable of being labeled as “ready” in the eyes of Tomlin. Could this be the Steelers slow-playing the situation and giving Fields more time to prove himself worthy of the QB1 title? We likely won’t ever know, but Tomlin and the organization are in no hurry to crown anyone QB1 right away. In the meantime, it’s Justin Fields as the team’s quarterback for a 4th week in a row.

As for the injuries the Steelers sustained after the Week 3 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, Tomlin labeled the following players as OUT for Week 4:

  • MyCole Pruitt (knee) – Pruitt suffered the injury in the Week 2 win over the Denver Broncos, and it looks like it will be a second straight week out before his is able to return.
  • Alex Highsmith (groin) – Reports are swirling this could be a multi-week groin injury, but not likely one which will require surgery. It was a reaggravation of the same groin injury he suffered in training camp.
  • Cory Trice (hamstring) – Trice injured his hamstring on special teams vs. the Chargers, and will need at least a week to recover.

As for players who are injured, but could return this week, Tomlin labeled them as questionable:

  • Isaac Seumalo (pec strain) – Seumalo has been back with the team at practice, but has yet to even be considered a limited participant. It seems unlikely he’ll return until he can have a full week of practice. In other words, barring something drastic it might be another week before Seumalo returns.
  • Jaylen Warren (knee) – Everyone thought Warren’s injury was the same as his hamstring, but it is considered a knee injury.

When fans read Monday about Najee Harris wearing a sling in the locker room, and combined with Warren’s injury, most assumed the worst. However, multiple reports stated Harris is fine, and Tomlin said there were no issues and Harris will be okay to play in Indianapolis this week.
