McCormick, Trice inactive for the Steelers in Wild Card round against the Ravens

The Pittsburgh Steelers are now less than 90 minutes away from their kickoff for their Wild Card matchup in Baltimore against the Ravens. Coming off four-straight losses against some of the top opponents they have seen all season, the Steelers have limped into the playoffs and travel to face a familiar opponent.

As is always the case, 90 minutes before kickoff is when teams must announce their inactive list for the upcoming game. With 48 players active for each team, the number of players on the inactive list depends on if a team makes any practice squad elevations. With the Steelers elevating two players from the practice squad, their inactive list is seven players. As for the Ravens, they also have seven players inactive.

Keep in mind that last season implemented a modified return of the “third quarterback rule.” Every NFL team who has a third quarterback on their 53-man roster may include him on their inactive list, but he can be designated as a third quarterback and is therefore in uniform in case of injury to the two players ahead of him on the depth chart. But if one of the players is deemed healthy enough to return, the third quarterback goes back to their role on the sideline.

Here are the seven players inactive for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card round against the Ravens according to Steelers.com.

Steelers Inactives

No. 4 QB Kyle Allen (3rd QB)
No. 13 WR Scotty Miller
No. 17 WR Jamal Agnew
No. 27 CB Cory Trice Jr.
No. 66 OL Mason McCormick
No. 91 LB Preston Smith
No. 94 DE Dean Lowry

This week, no players had already been ruled out for the Steelers coming into the game the only player with an injury status was guard Mason McCormick who was questionable with his broken hand he suffered last week. After being limited all week in practice, McCormick is inactive in Baltimore as Spencer Anderson will get the start.

When it comes to the third quarterback, quarterback Kyle Allen on the inactive list but still in uniform as the team’s third option.

The Steelers have five other healthy scratches for the game this week. Dean Lowry has been on and off the inactive list this season depending on the health of other players. With all the defensive linemen healthy, the Steelers have Lowry inactive again but have Isaiahh Loudermilk active after missing last week where they went with only four defensive linemen. By having Loudermilk back, the Steelers once again have outside linebacker Preston Smith inactive for the second time as he did not get a helmet against the Chiefs.

After starting it outside cornerback last week, Cory Trice doesn’t get a helmet as the Steelers were unable to squeeze one somewhere else after the return of Donte Jackson. When looking at Trice versus James Pierre, it likely came down to special teams as the determining factor as Trice has vastly outplayed Pierre on defense.

The other two healthy scratches were the two players the Steelers elevated from the practice squad earlier on Saturday. After signing Scotty Miller to the practice squad, both he and Jamal Agnew were elevated for the game only to be inactive.
