Knee Jerk Reactions to the Steelers 37-15 Shellacking of the Jets
The idiom āa knee jerk reactionā means that you respond to something in an equally unthinking way. Thatās something as sports fans that we typically do, and if itās in an unthinking way then I definitely qualify. Knee jerks apply especially if you are a full blood Yinzer, or even just a part Yinzer, who am I fooling itās more like if you are a Steeler fan in general. As is the custom, I compile my knee-jerk thoughts and publish them immediately after each Steelers game (my son Kyle or nephew Warren might have a few things to say as well). Itās my version of running my mouth first and apologizing later (if at all). So with that being said, itās time to react to the Steelers Week 7 against the Jets. Letās get this going, HEREā¦ā¦WEā¦ā¦GO!!!
1st Quarter
- Steelers will start on offense.
- Mount Washington with the Steelers first 1st down of the game.
- Strong run by Najee.
- Promising first drive stalls out. Boswell to attempt a field goal. It’s good. Steelers 3, Jets 0.
- Nice to see Alex Highsmith back on the field.
- Larry O. with a sack of Aaron Rodgers on third down! Defense forces a three and out.
- Screen and a Jalen Warren run and the Steelers are faced with third down and one. And Calvin Austin drops it. Steelers to punt. You got to catch that ball.
- The Jets muff the punt but unfortunately for the Steelers it falls harmlessly out of bounds.
- Larry O. gets flagged after a great stop. We are upset that they threw that flag but not the one for the late hit on Jaylen Warren earlier.
- The Jets are faced with fourth and about a foot and a half, they will go for it here I’m sure.
- That’s insane they ended up spotting that and giving him a first down. We thought they’d given him a generous spot to come up a foot and a half short.
- I wonder if that was an Aaron Rodgers call by the officiating crew.
- I’m so sick of listening to Mike Tirrico and Chris Collinsworth slobber all over the Jets because of Davante Adams.
- The Steelers missed their fourth tackle on this drive.
- And more poor tackling by the Steelers, and Hall goes in for the touchdown. Jets 7, Steelers 3.
- On 2nd and 10th let’s toss it to Najee so he can lose 3 yards.
- And the pass on third down is deflected Steelers go three and out. The boo birds are out as the Steelers punt.
- The Steelers force their own three and out.
- End of the first quarter. Jets 7, Steelers 3.
2nd Quarter
- Very errant throw by Russell Wilson. That drew some boos from the crowd.
- Wilson again not anywhere close to the receiver. Another three and out for the Steelers and the boos are picking up.
- Highsmith almost gets to Rogers, but Cam Heyward knocks the pass down. Third down for the Jets.
- The past is complete but short of the sticks. Steelers to get it back.
- Two short Nejee Harris runs and the Steelers will face another third down. Never mind, the Steelers had a hold so it will be second down and very long.
- Deep ball from Russell Wilson, it wasn’t a great throw but when you have George Pickens doing George Pickens things it works out.
- Steelers find their way into the red zone. They need to convert this into a touchdown.
- A negative play on second down really killed it. Steelers will end up trying the short field goal. It’s good. Jets 7, Steelers 6.
- After failling in the red zone Kyle has bailed for a shower, and my nephew Warren says he doesn’t know if he can stay up and watch this garbage.
- I think the Steelers missed five tackles on that play and the Jets are now inside the 10-yard line.
- So it looks like the Steelers can’t score touchdowns themselves, but are going to just give them away to the Jets.
- On 3rd and goal the Jets complete for the touchdown. Minkah blocks the extra point but gets called for leverage. The Jets will now go for two. They complete it. Jets 15, Steelers 6.
- The Steelers are giving up touchdowns in the red zone while they are only able to score field goals in the red zone. You lose football games that way.
- The Steelers start off with a nice catch and run by Muth. But the very next play Dan Moore Jr gets called for a hold. I think they had the names backward and it was McCullum with the hold and Moore was down field, not the way they said it.
- On second down and 20, Russell Wilson is sacked. After a promising start the Steelers are now going the wrong direction for this drive.
- The Steelers will punt yet again.
- There’s a surprise. James Pierre was in the game and got burned.
- Beanie Bishop with the interception! The Steelers need to turn this into points before the half.
- The Steelers wasted a bunch of time to run another play. That play was a run that went for three yards. That’s a lot of wasted time for 3 yards.
- They get Sauce Gardner for a face guarding interference call. Steelers have the ball at the 11-yard line.
- Touchdown George Pickens!!! Jets 15, Steelers 13.
- One play from the Jets that loses yards, and that’s the half.
3rd Quarter
- If you give Aaron Rodgers time and are playing zone, he’s going to pick you apart.
- After that initial first down, the Steelers defense holds and the Jets will punt. Good pressure on third down from Highsmith. It is really nice having him back in the lineup.
- Steelers quickly get to 3rd and 7. They were 0 for 6 on 3rd Downs in the first half.
- I don’t even know how to describe that play by George Pickens. He didn’t have it, he had it, he didn’t have it, he had it. I don’t know but in the end he had it.
- Muuuth!!! What a catch!
- The Steelers had first and goal at the four, but cannot punch it in again. Boswell on for the field goal attempt. It’s good. Steelers 16, Jets 15.
- Beanie Bishop with another interception! Big time return almost turned it into a pick 6. Steelers start first and goal at the one.
- Wouldn’t this be the place to put Fields in and tush push him into the end zone?
- Russell Wilson sneaks it in for the touchdown. Steelers 23, Jets 15.
- And now the Steelers defense is getting gashed.
- How was that not a hold against Alex Highsmith?
- The Jets are facing fourth down and a long one and are going for it. They convert on a 15-yard pass play.
- Watt! Right in Aaron Rodgers face and deflects the pass. Jets facing a third down.
- Joey Porter Jr had great coverage on that play.
- Jets will attempt to field goal. Blocked! The Jets get nothing.
- Dean Lowery with the block.
- I don’t like when Russell Wilson is floating the ball to Mount Washington. He’s being hit as soon as he catches it. He needs to catch it and then be able to go lay the smackdown on somebody.
- The Steelers immediately get to third down and eight. They really need to convert here and not put the defense right back out on the field.
- Russ escapes and gets it to Jalyen Warren who converts the first down.
- The Steelers convert a first down at midfield to end the third quarter. Steelers 23, Jets 15.
4th Quarter
- Najee with a 34-yard run! The Steelers are in business.
- Najee continues to run hard. First and goal Steelers inside the five.
- On 3rd and goal Russell Wilson hits Van Jefferson for the touchdown! That’s the kind of drive the Steelers needed! I know it wasn’t a touchdown off the turnover, but a blocked field goal is almost as good as a turnover. And the Steelers are turning them into touchdowns. Steelers 30, Jets 15.
- Let’s hype up the defense again! Renegade is playing in the stadium!
- Joey Porter Jr. in run support drops Hall for a loss.
- The defense now has the Jets facing 3rd & 12. Let’s make this play and get off the field.
- I love to say it was something different for the Steelers but they rushed four, didn’t get pressure and played zone behind it and Rogers picked them apart.
- Quick throw from Rogers and Minkah missed the tackle.
- Elliot with a big hit! The Jets are going to have to go for it on 4th down and four.
- Keeanu Benton knocks down the fourth down pass from Rogers. The Steelers take over on downs.
- Rock to the Naj?
- Calvin Austin III finally redeems himself for that drop earlier. He was wide open and gets a huge gain for the Steelers.
- On third down and four, the toss to Jaylen Warren goes for five. And that’s another Pittsburgh Steelers first dahn!
- The Steelers are really grinding the time off the clock right now.
- How did they not give Jaylen Warren the first down there? It looked obvious. Tomlin throws the challenge flag.
- Somehow that call stands. It’s 4th and about an inch and a half. The Steelers are going to go for it.
- It looked rough, as Russ was pushed back initially but was able to get through and pick up the first.
- The Steelers are going to go for it on 4th and two. There’s only 35 seconds to play so I don’t really think it matters. They end up taking a time out.
- The Steelers have scored 30 points or more in back-to-back weeks. Are they suddenly an offensive team?
- Najee with a touchdown run! That run put Najee over 100 yards for the game. Steelers 37, Jets 15.
- Sure is nice for the Steelers to run that score up after having to listen to Chris Collinsworth slobber all over Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams during the first half.
- 3-2-1 Win! The defense pitches a shutout in the second half, and the offense outscores the Jets 31 to 0 after that whole extra point block debacle.
Once again, I just fired off what was going through my head at the time. All reactions were in real time. Basically, it is the equivalent of watching the game with a me and Kyle (Warren too), you just donāt have to go to another room because of my screaming at the television (sometimes Kyle leaves the room). Now time to process it, some quick analyzing for the Scho Bro Show, and then put it behind me so I can ready myself for the Week 8 matchup against the Giants on Monday night. Make sure you get your voice heard in the comments below.
