Justin Fields inactive for the Steelers in Week 8 vs. the Giants
The Pittsburgh Steelers are now less than 90 minutes away from their kickoff for Week 8 of the 2024 NFL season. Back in Pittsburgh for Monday Night Football, it’s their second prime time game in back-to-back weeks this time as 6-point favorites over the New York Giants.
As is always the case, 90 minutes before kickoff is when teams must announce their inactive list for the upcoming game. With 48 players active for each team, the number of players on the inactive list depends on if a team makes any practice squad elevations. With the Steelers elevating one player, signing one more to the roster, releasing one, and placing another on IR, their inactive list is five players. As for the Giants, they also have seven players due to their practice squad elevations.
Keep in mind that last season implemented a modified return of the “third quarterback rule.” Every NFL team who has a third quarterback on their 53-man roster may include him on their inactive list, but he can be designated as a third quarterback and is therefore in uniform in case of injury to the two players ahead of him on the depth chart. But if one of the players is deemed healthy enough to return, the third quarterback goes back to their role on the sideline.
Here are the five players inactive for the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 8 against the Giants according to Steelers.com.
Steelers Inactives
No. 2 QB Justin Fields (3rd QB)
No. 21 CB C.J. Henderson
No. 51 LB Nick Herbig
No. 54 C Zach Frazier
No. 84 RB/KR Cordarrelle Patterson
This week, three players had already been ruled out for the Steelers coming into the game. Those players were linebacker Nick Herbig, center Zach Frazier, and running back and kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson. This will be the fourth-straight game Patterson has missed as he was injured in Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts. Nick Herbig is missing his third game after leaving the Week 6 matchup against the Dallas Cowboy while Zach Frazier is missing his second start of the season.
A late story this week has been the status of the Steelers quarterback position and who would be the backup. Justin Fields ended up being added to the injury report on Sunday with a hamstring injury. While it was reported earlier today that Fields should be fine, whether or not the Steelers make him the third option was unclear. After testing his hamstring before the game, the Steelers are playing it safe with Fields ahead of the bye week. Fields is the third quarterback and on the inactive list for the first time this season and can only enter the game if both other quarterbacks are out due to injury. Kyle Allen will serve as the backup.
For the final player on the injury list, the Steelers have cornerback C.J. Henderson inactive his first week on the 53-man roster. Signing Henderson off the practice squad this week, the Steelers opted to go with only nine defensive backs. The Steelers actually have more tight ends (five) than cornerbacks (four) active for the game.
