Joey Porter Jr. and Patrick Peterson earn PFWA Awards

The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for Week 18 in the NFL regular season, and that means it’s time to hand out awards for the season which is grinding to a halt. Tuesday it was announced T.J. Watt was named the team’s Most Valuable Player for 2023, his 4th time winning the award, but Wednesday the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) Pittsburgh Chapter gave out two other awards.

The first award handed out is the Rookie of the Year award, also named the Joe Greene Award. That honor was given to rookie cornerback, Joey Porter Jr.

The next award was The Chief Award, given to the player who is deserving for their willingness to work with the media. That award winner was Patrick Peterson.

This from Mark Kaboly, of the PFWA Pittsburgh Chapter and The Athletic:

While the Chief Award is rarely debated, considering fans don’t see how players interact with the media, there were a couple other players who could have been given the rookie of the year award without much argument. This isn’t to suggest Porter isn’t worthy of the award, but both Broderick Jones and Keeanu Benton have been very good pieces for the Steelers on both the offensive and defensive lines throughout the season.

Congratulations to both Joey Porter Jr. and Patrick Peterson for their awards! Be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for the Baltimore Ravens this Saturday afternoon in Week 18.
