It’s nice to not have to talk about the Steelers QB situation all the time
You know how I’m always telling you how annoyed I am when you won’t shut up about certain things?
OK, well, the Steelers have won three games in a row with Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback, and not once has there been a fan or media debate about the pros and cons of replacing him with Justin Fields.
I want to thank you for that.
We heard such debates during the first six games of the 2024 regular season, even when Fields was the quarterback and helping to lead Pittsburgh to a 4-2 start. We even heard these discussions during the days and hours before Wilson officially replaced Fields for a Week 7 primetime game vs. the Jets on Sunday Night Football.
Why haven’t there been any debates with Wilson as the straw stirring Arthur Smith’s drink? No, not just because the Steelers have won three games in a row and are now 7-2 and in first place in the AFC North. It’s because Wilson looks legit as the leader of the offense. He conducts himself like the real deal and his teammates have responded to that. Most importantly, the offense is functioning like an NFL offense in 2024 and not one in the dead ball era of 1974, back when trying to win by running the football and playing great defense was something you could do without people mocking you for being out of touch.
Remember how annoyed and/or outraged Steelers fans used to get when Ben Roethlisberger was often criminally underrated in (insert one of the countless quarterback rankings here)? I never gave a damn; I was just happy the Steelers had a franchise quarterback. There aren’t many of them walking the planet at any given time. When you have one leading your team, be happy.
I believe the Steelers have that man again in Wilson. Is he the Wilson of 2013 or 2014? Is he even the Wilson of 2019? Not likely, but he’s got some eliteness left in the tank, and I’m just happy he’s using it to fuel Pittsburgh’s offensive attack in 2024.
Will Wilson be retained next year at a much heftier price than the $1.2 million the Steelers are paying him this season? I am not worried about that at the moment. I’m just enjoying the ride. It’s simply nice to sit down and watch a Steelers game and know that I won’t be bored out of my mind–even during a victory.
You know how disgruntled I had become over the past few years about this organization even as it refused to have a losing season and made the postseason a few times? It was because I knew I was watching a team with no chance of winning anything important when the chips were down in January.
I was proven right in January of 2021, 2022 and 2024.
I feel like I’ll be proven right again in January of 2025, only because I now think the Steelers can do some damage this NFL postseason.
The Steelers have Russ, which, as the memes say, makes them DangerRuss.
In the meantime, I’ll watch as Wilson leads Pittsburgh into battle over the next two months against teams with quarterbacks named Jackson, Burrow, Hurts and Mahomes.
Does Wilson have what it takes to help the Steelers secure enough wins to make 2024 a truly memorable campaign? Also, much like the non-stop quarterback debates that persisted the past few offseasons and included people named Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph, can Wilson finally help end the endless vitriol about Pittsburgh not winning a playoff game in…so far it’s been seven years?
I honestly have a positive feeling about both of those questions.
Can Russell Wilson make the Steelers worth watching again? He’s already answered that one.
