Isaac Seumalo knows what needs to happen for the Steelers to get to the next level

The Pittsburgh Steelers are now in full offseason mode, but the unpacking of content from the players clearing out their lockers and Mike Tomlin’s season-ending press conference continues. What might have been left on the cutting room floor of some outlets, a quote from offensive guard Isaac Seumalo is gathering steam in the wake of the playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac tweeted out Seumalo’s quote about the Steelers offense, mainly the quarterback situation. You can see the tweet, and the full quote, below:

While some outlets have started to run with the quote and announce Seumalo is making some glaring declaration, he truthfully is only saying what every honest fan knows after the 2023 season.

You can’t win without a quarterback.

If the Wild Card Round in the AFC Playoffs wasn’t evidence enough of what the haves and have-nots are, as it pertains to quarterback play at the highest level, I don’t know what game you were watching. What Seumalo is suggesting is the organization needs to figure out who “the guy” is, and run with that guy. Solidarity at the most important position in professional sports is a necessity.

Seumalo spoke truth, but the answer is far from simple. The Steelers quarterback situation is anything but settled heading into 2024. Is Kenny Pickett the QB1, as Tomlin suggested in his press conference Thursday? Will the team try to sign Mason Rudolph? If they don’t, will they go after another veteran in free agency? If the team does go the route of free agent signings, would they also consider drafting another quarterback?

All of this leads to far more questions than answers, and the fact the team will be hiring a new offensive coordinator muddies the waters even more than they were at the end of the season when Mason Rudolph, not Pickett, was the man with the ball as the team headed into the postseason.

How will they handle the quarterback situation? That has yet to be determined, but I feel as if Seumalo speaks for the entire team when he says the team needs to figure out the quarterback situation sooner, rather than later.
