Isaac Seumalo being evaluated for pectoral injury following Steelers practice

When you think about the Pittsburgh Steelers preparing for the regular season, one of the biggest benefits from the team has been the overall health of their core players. They were able to avoid those nagging training camp and preseason injuries, and it looked like it was all-systems-go prior to Week 1.

Until now.

After practice Wednesday ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting starting guard Isaac Seumalo is dealing with a pectoral injury and is undergoing tests to determine the severity.

Steelers fans are familiar with pectoral injuries as that was the injury which sidelined T.J. Watt two years ago for nearly the entire season. While a pass rusher is different from an offensive lineman, a pectoral injury is a lengthy rehabilitation process, if not a season-ending injury.

If Seumalo is lost for any amount of time the Steelers do have a couple in-house candidates to potentially fill in. Those would be versatile lineman Spencer Anderson, or rookie Mason McCormick. If Seumalo is missing time and McCormick is the player tabbed to fill his position, the Steelers could see as many as three rookies starting along the offensive line with McCormick, Zach Frazier and Troy Fautanu all expected to start this season.

UPDATE:

Steelers believe they “dodged a bullet” with Seumalo’s injury being a strain and not a tear. He’ll still miss time though.
