There are a slew of NFL running backs who have yet to find a new home in 2023, but most wouldn’t believe former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Benny Snell Jr. would find his way onto that list. Nonetheless, when the Detroit Lions were looking to add depth at the position, they didn’t go with one of the bigger names, but instead signed Snell to add to their depth chart.

Snell, who was drafted out of Kentucky in the 4th Round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and has been the epitome of a RB3 his entire career. Last season, and one reason why many Steelers fans thought he may return for the 2023 season, Snell’s biggest impact wasn’t on offense, but special teams. Snell played plenty on special teams, and played well in his role. However, he never lived up to the hype he gave himself when he labeled himself “Benny Snell Football” as a rookie.

The Steelers seem to be set with their Top 3 running backs in Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren and Anthony McFarland, but it would be interesting to see if Snell doesn’t make the Lions roster if the Steelers would pick up the phone. Then again, if they wanted to obtain Snell’s services this year, they would have had plenty of opportunity to do so this offseason.
