Steel Curtain Network: A Pittsburgh Steelers podcast

Don’t rule the Steelers out of the Davante Adams sweepstakes just yet

The Pittsburgh Steelers don’t just want to obtain a wide receiver, it has now officially become a need. Through the first five games of the season the Steelers have not seen anyone show up as the true WR2 on the team, and some might have questions about George Pickens ability to handle the duty of being a WR1 on the depth chart.

Of course the Steelers were heavily involved in trade talks with any number of receiver dating back to before the 2024 NFL Draft, most notably with the San Francisco 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk. When Aiyuk decided to stay with the 49ers, the Steelers were left as the odd man out, and were forced to head into the 2024 regular season with the following depth chart:

  • George Pickens
  • Van Jefferson
  • Calvin Austin III
  • Roman Wilson (has yet to be active for a game)
  • Scotty Miller

As stated earlier, the Steelers haven’t had the results they were hoping for with this current crop of receivers, and through the early slate of games only one receiver has scored a touchdown this season, Calvin Austin III’s catch-and-run vs. the Los Angeles Chargers. Needless to say, the Steelers need help at wide receiver. Help to free up Pickens from the double teams he’s been seeing, and the ability to not force players like Jefferson, Austin and Miller into a role they truly aren’t capable of filling.

You can imagine what the fan reaction was when news hit of Las Vegas Raiders receiver Davante Adams wanting to be traded out of Vegas. And yes, the Steelers were interested.

Our source inside the facility has been very adamant the Steelers are players in the Adams since he made it known he wants traded. The same source even reached out Monday morning and suggested while the Adams deal could be done soon, the longer it lasts the higher the likelihood of the Steelers potentially landing the superstar.

The caveat being the Steelers Week 6 opponent is the Las Vegas Raiders. If the Steelers are giving the best offer, the Raiders aren’t about to have Adams play in Vegas Sunday on the visiting team. However, if the Steelers are out-bid, this deal could be done sooner, rather than later.

The longer it goes, there is a strong chance the Steelers could be winners of the Adams sweepstakes.

There is a strong sect of the fan base who might believe, even at 3-2, acquiring a talent like Adams isn’t worth the future draft pick and a potential player, but he absolutely could help the Steelers offense in a multitude of ways.
