Steel Curtain Network: A Pittsburgh Steelers podcast

Diontae Johnson is “on the market” as the new league year arrives

The Pittsburgh Steelers are ready for the start of the new league year, and with salary cap space available they are equipped to make moves. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t also listening to potential trade options for some players.

One of those players is wide receiver Diontae Johnson.

Our source at Steel Curtain Network told us Johnson is “on the market” as the new league year approaches Wednesday. But before fans suggest this isn’t news, the Steelers certainly have players who they won’t even take trade inquiries regarding based on their value to the organization.

Johnson, who is entering the final year of his current contract, would not fall into that category.

The Steelers are looking to “freshen up” the wide receiver room, but it needs to be noted how nothing is imminent with Johnson potentially being on the move. Just simply how the Steelers are willing to listen to offers. There are teams who absolutely will be interested in Johnson’s skill set for their offense, the question will be if the Steelers are going to get any type of return they deem to be valuable enough to make the move.

If someone is trying to compare a potential trade with Johnson and the Jerry Jeudy to the Cleveland Browns trade, just know the Steelers aren’t trying to move Johnson based on his contract, like Denver was with the Jeudy trade. If the Steelers kept Johnson, it wouldn’t break the bank, but moving him could provide some salary cap relief which would help them add to the position room.

In 2024 the theme with the Steelers wide receiver room could be “fresh” if they do in fact shop Johnson. New wide receivers coach in Zach Azzanni, and some new players to go with the new coach could be exactly what the Steelers need to help the room in the long term.
