Defensive keys to victory for the Steelers vs. the Jets in Week 7
The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for the 2024 regular season, and with it being the team’s seventh game fans’ hopes remain high heading into the second quarter of the season. The hope is there is a winning performance on the horizon on Sunday in Week 7 when the team hosts the New York Jets on Sunday Night Football.
What exactly do the Steelers need to do to on offense to claim their fifth victory of 2024? Let’s break it down…
Defense
Be Aggressive
The Pittsburgh Steelers are slated to get Alex Highsmith back in the lineup, and they will have to keep the heat on Aaron Rodgers throughout the game. The Jets have given up 16 sacks this season, and Rodgers has been beaten up on more than one occasion by other top defenses in the league. Giving Rodgers at on of time in the pocket isn’t an option, so putting pressure on the quarterback by any means necessary will be big.
Stop the run
The Jets running attack isn’t much to write home about, averaging just 87.2 yards per game. On top of that, the Steelers defense is just surrendering 85.5 yards per game on the ground. Making the Jets one-dimensional will be big for the Steelers defense to try and accomplish the first key of harassing Rodgers early and often.
Keep taking it away
The Jets have turned it over 7 times (5 INT / 2 Fumbles) this season, but it’s the Steelers defense which has been taking it away at a crazy clip. The Steelers, after a two game drought, has bounced back in a big way tallying 11 takeaways (7 INTs / 4 FRs) this season. Nonetheless, if the Steelers defense can help the offense not by just keeping the Jets off the scoreboard, but also by giving them more possessions, will be important.
Win “Money” downs
The Jets offense is 3rd in 3rd down offense, converting 41% of the time. In the red-zone, the Jets are converting into touchdowns 52.9% of attempts. As for the Steelers, defensively the 3rd down unit has moved to a T-14 ranking with 35.6% of conversions, and the Pittsburgh red-zone is also 3rd with a 38.8% conversion rate. If the Steelers can win these “money” downs, they could be well on their way towards notching their fifth win of the 2024 season.
