Damontae Kazee, Roman Wilson inactive for Week 7 vs. the Jets

The Pittsburgh Steelers are now less than 90 minutes away from their kickoff for Week 7 of the 2024 NFL season. Back in Pittsburgh for Sunday Night Football for the second time this season, the Steelers find themselves as home underdogs to a 2-4 team despite being 4-2.

As is always the case, 90 minutes before kickoff is when teams must announce their inactive list for the upcoming game. With 48 players active for each team, the number of players on the inactive list depends on if a team makes any practice squad elevations. With the Steelers elevating two players and signing one more to the roster on Saturday, their inactive list is seven players. As for the Jets, they also have seven players due to their practice squad elevations.

Keep in mind that last season implemented a modified return of the “third quarterback rule.” Every NFL team who has a third quarterback on their 53-man roster may include him on their inactive list, but he can be designated as a third quarterback and is therefore in uniform in case of injury to the two players ahead of him on the depth chart. But if one of the players is deemed healthy enough to return, the third quarterback goes back to their role on the sideline.

Here are the seven players inactive for the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 7 against the Jets according to Steelers.com.

Steelers Inactives

No. 4 QB Kyle Allen (3rd QB)
No. 10 Roman Wilson
No. 23 S Damontae Kazee
No. 33 RB Aaron Shampklin
No. 51 LB Nick Herbig
No. 54 C Zach Frazier

No. 84 RB/KR Cordarrelle Patterson

This week, four players had already been ruled out for the Steelers coming into the game. Those players were linebacker Nick Herbig, center Zach Frazier, and running back and kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson. This will be the third-straight game Patterson has missed as he was injured in Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts. Nick Herbig is missing his second game after leaving the Week 6 matchup against the Dallas Cowboy while Zach Frazier is missing the first start of his career.

Two other players who are missing this game after appearing on the Steelers injury report or wide receiver Roman Wilson with a hamstring injury and safety Damontae Kazee with an ankle entry. Kazee missed the Steelers last game with the injury but looked as if he would be returning this week. Instead, he landed on the injury report as questionable as an addition on Saturday. As for Roman Wilson, after being active for his first NFL game last week, he finds himself inactive again with a different injury.

An ongoing story all week has been the status of the Steelers quarterback position and who would be starting in Week 7. What wasn’t up for debate was who would be the emergency quarterback going forward. For this reason, quarterback Kyle Allen is the third quarterback and on the inactive list for the second time this season and can only enter the game if both other quarterbacks are out due to injury.

The other healthy player who is inactive is running back Aaron Shampklin. The Steelers made the decision to elevate running back Jonathan Ward from the practice squad and have Shampklin inactive while on the 53-man roster. In doing so, the Steelers have offensive lineman Max Scharping active and have nine offensive linemen available. Signing with the Steelers off the Washington Commanders practice squad, Scharping has 33 starts in 79 games over the last five seasons with both the Houston Texans and Cincinnati Bengals.
