Art Rooney II says the Steelers are planning to run it back with their coordinators

When the Pittsburgh Steelers season ended with five straight losses, the final being a drubbing in the Wild Card Round by the Baltimore Ravens, the fan base was upset. But they were also hopeful for the chance to finally see change. Change on all levels. Would this be the year Mike Tomlin is finally relieved of his duties? What about the coordinators? Would they tear it down to the studs, and then rebuild it to the best of their ability?

The answer to Tomlin being dismissed, for those who have paid close attention to the team, was known well before any NFL insider suggested he wasn’t going anywhere. His contract and no-trade clause made him staying almost a certainty. As for the coordinators, that was a different story.

Arthur Smith drew some head coaching interviews in this latest cycle, and some believed he would maybe find work elsewhere. Otherwise, Smith’s offense fell flat down the stretch, and many pointed to the play calling as the primary reason for their failures. Would the team look to replace Smith after just one season?

On the defensive side of the ball, Teryl Austin’s defense also didn’t perform up to par, and at times looked more mediocre and mundane than elite. Many view Austin as just a figure head for Mike Tomlin’s defense. But would they want a fresh set of eyes on the defensive side of the ball?

At Mike Tomlin’s end-of-season press conference he talked about changes on all levels. Of course this didn’t include him, but fans were hopeful to see serious changes which would be impactful. Over the last two weeks there has been no changes outside of Reserve/Future players being signed to offseason contracts.

Nothing has changed.

Monday Art Rooney II met with media, and also Rob King of Steelers.com, to discuss the state of the Steelers heading into the offseason. While he didn’t come out and suggest both coordinators would stay in the media session earlier in the day, he did so in the video below (which can also be viewed HERE).

Rooney talked about changes in the coaching staff when talking with the media, but if it doesn’t include some of the men who are truly calling the shots, will it even matter? If the team decides not to renew tight ends coach Alfredo Roberts’ contract, will it move the needle? I can’t speak for you, but it won’t for me.

If they decide to part ways with offensive line coach Pat Meyer, that might be the only move of a position coach which would make me raise an eyebrow and take notice.

Throughout all of the Art Rooney II media sessions, he seemed as if he was a man who was just like us fans…helpless to the outcome of the results on the field. As if he doesn’t realize he could take an approach like his father Dan, and change the trajectory of the team by making some difficult decisions at difficult times.

Instead, fans are left feeling as if the Steelers organization is a rudderless ship floating on rocky seas, and that starts from the very top.
