Are Coaching Changes Coming for the Steelers?

At the time of writing, the Pittsburgh Steelers have yet to make any significant moves with their coaching staff. During his end-of-season press conference, Head Coach Mike Tomlin hinted that changes might be on the horizon. Yet, here we are, still waiting. As fans, we can all agree—actually, let’s be real, we know—that changes are needed.

The Steelers are known for their patience with coaches. This is an organization that doesn’t fire coaches mid-contract. Instead, they allow coaches to finish their terms before deciding whether to renew or let them walk. For fans hoping for a shake-up, that’s not great news. None of the coaches fans seem most frustrated with—Tomlin, Teryl Austin, or Pat Meyer—are at the end of their contracts. Based on the team’s history, it’s a safe bet they’ll all be back for the 2025 season.

The Steelers’ hesitancy to fire coaches mid-contract is well-documented. To my knowledge, Matt Canada is the only coach fired while still under contract since the 1930s. So, while I’m not necessarily advocating for mass firings, let’s be honest—this team needs something to change to improve results.

Where are the changes? What exactly are the Steelers waiting for? Watching other teams fill head coaching and coordinator roles across the league got me wondering: could the Steelers be playing the waiting game? Maybe they’re letting the dust settle, eyeing coaches left standing after the annual game of musical chairs.

One name that caught my attention is Larry Foote. The former Steelers linebacker is currently the inside linebackers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is interviewing for the Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator position. If he doesn’t land that role, the Steelers should seriously consider bringing him back to Pittsburgh. His experience, familiarity with the organization, and leadership could be invaluable, particularly for helping the defense’s front seven.

Also, I believe 2025 will be Austin’s final year under contract. If Foote impresses the coaching staff, could he be a viable option as the next defensive coordinator? Okay, I’m getting ahead of myself—back to the current Pittsburgh Steelers.

This perspective opens the door to a broader possibility. Instead of replacing current staff, perhaps the Steelers are exploring opportunities to expand their coaching roster. They might be waiting to see where top-tier coaching talent—such as Thomas Brown (former Bears OC and interim HC), Anthony Weaver (Dolphins DC), or Mike Kafka (Giants OC)—ultimately lands. While these specific names may not be on the Steelers’ radar, the idea remains: they could be positioning themselves to act quickly if someone unexpectedly becomes available. Brian Flores’ addition a few seasons ago serves as a prime example of this approach.

Bringing in an experienced coach—especially someone who’s been a coordinator or head coach—could provide a valuable and fresh perspective for this team. NFL seasons are unpredictable, and the Steelers need to adapt to stay competitive. Adding new voices and ideas to the mix could help improve game planning and preparation, giving the team an edge it desperately needs.

Change is inevitable. Whether it comes in the form of new hires or tweaks to the current staff, something has to give. The Steelers can’t afford to stand still while the rest of the league moves forward. While their methodical approach may frustrate fans eager for action, it could pay off if they manage to snag a hidden gem from the coaching carousel.

For now, though, we’re left waiting—waiting to see what, if anything, the Steelers will do to shake things up and get back to being the team we know they can be.
