Analyzing the Steelers Week 8 win over the Giants, by the numbers
The Pittsburgh Steelers won both games of their back-to-back prime time home matchups against New York teams, this time coming against the New York Giants. Covering the spread with a 26-18 score, the Steelers settled for a lot of field goals but were still able to get the victory.
So without further ado, here are some of the numbers involved in the Steelers Week 8 win over the Giants.
+1
After both teams played a very clean game until the final five minutes, it looked as if the Steelers were going to end up on the wrong side of the turnover margin when Russell Wilson had the ball punched out and recovered by the Giants with 4:34 remaining in the game. But T.J. Watt answered with his own strip sack on the ensuing drive and Beanie Bishop ended the Giants threat with an interception with 0:34 remaining. Once again, the Steelers came out on the right end of the turnover margin at +1.
426
After hitting 400 yards of offense for the second time this season last week, the Steelers now did it back-to-back weeks as they put up 426 yards on the night. The Steelers did so with 167 rushing yards and 259 net passing yards. Although Russell Wilson threw for 278 yards, the Steelers lost 19 yards on four sacks.
0/4
As much as the Steelers moved the football, they struggled with finishing drives with touchdowns. The Steelers made it to the red zone 4 times in the game but did not finish any of those drives with the touchdown. The Steelers even reached goal-to-go twice and still couldn’t punch it in. On the flip-side, the Giants reached the red zone three times and did not score any touchdowns either.
12
The Steelers got to the quarterback with 4.0 sacks in the game with two each from T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. What was also impressive was the Steelers finished the game with 12 quarterback hits. Half of the quarterback hits came from Alex Highsmith as he posted 6 on the night.
157
On the defensive side of the ball, one of the biggest struggles was their inability to stop the run. In all, the Steelers gave up 157 rushing yards on 25 carries for a 6.3 average. Rookie Tyrone Tracy rushed for 145 yards on 20 carries for a 7.3 yard average and a 45 yard touchdown. It was the first time in 2024 the Steelers gave up over 150 rushing yards.
46%
Although the number wasn’t terrible, it also wasn’t fantastic when it came to the Steelers third down conversions. For the game, the Steelers were 6 of 13 for a 46% conversion rate. The Steelers started the game 3 of 7 for a 43% conversion rate in the first half and finished up 3 of 6 for a 50% conversion rate over the final 30 minutes. On the other side, the Steelers gave up 5 of 15 third down attempts by the Giants for a 33% conversion rate.
114
For the first time in his NFL career, Najee Harris has rushed for over 100 yards in three straight games. With 114 rushing yards on 19 carries, Harris had a 6.0 average on the night. Harris also added 3 receptions on 4 targets for 17 receiving yards.
73
In what was very well the play of the game, Calvin Austin had a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown. It was the first touchdown scored in the game and it came with 4:38 remaining in the third quarter. It was also the Steelers first punt return for a touchdown since Week 14 of the 2019 season.
5 for 50
The Steelers had another performance where the penalties did not seem to stack up, but they did come at costly moments. The Steelers only had 5 accepted penalties for 50 yards on the night. The biggest of them all was the 15-yard facemask penalty against Broderick Jones which took a touchdown off the board on the Steelers opening and they ended up having to settle for a field goal. On the other side, the New York Giants were called for 11 penalties but only for 65 yards.

Once again, the only number that matters is adding another tally to the win column. It wasn’t perfect, and the Steelers didn’t have their best game of the season, but they still managed a victory to finish at 6–2 ahead of their bye week.
So there are some numbers to help put the Steelers Week 8 win in perspective. The Steelers now head into their bye week on their second three-game winning streak of the season.
