Analyzing the Steelers Week 7 win over the Jets, by the numbers

The Pittsburgh Steelers answered their Week 6 decisive win with another decisive win at home in prime time, this time coming against the New York Jets. Winning by a commanding 37-15 score, the Steelers once again started slow only to bounce back and take control as the game went on.

So without further ado, here are some of the numbers involved in the Steelers Week 7 win over the Jets.

+2

The Steelers once again had a week where, not only did they win the turnover margin, they added to it with another game-changing play that isn’t technically a takeaway but just as impactful. What does go on the stat sheet are the 2 interceptions by Beanie Bishop, both of which led to Steelers touchdowns. Additionally, the Steelers were able to successfully block a field goal, this time without an incorrect penalty like what happened on an earlier extra point, and also turned that position into a touchdown. So while the Steelers technically had 2 takeaways with no turnovers and 14 points off those takeaways, they, in essence, had 3 which led to 21 points.

409

For the second time this season, the Steelers went over 400 yards of offense in the game, this time with 409 yards. But unlike the last time the Steelers hit the 400-yard mark, this time it was done in a victory. The Steelers had 260 net yards of passing with 149 rushing yards. Russell Wilson threw for 264 yards on 16 completions from 29 attempts but lost 4 yards on the one sack which was surrendered. The Steelers 149 rushing yards came on 36 carries for a 4.1 average. Najee Harris led the way with 102 yards on 21 carries, but 70 of those yards on 10 carries along with his rushing touchdown came in the fourth quarter.

4/4

The Pittsburgh Steelers were able to add a touchdown just before the half to cut the Jets lead to only two at halftime thanks to a Beanie Bishop interception. Coming out of the half, the Steelers only had 4 possessions in the final 30 minutes but turned all 4 of them into points. The Steelers scored 24 second-half points off of a field goal on their opening drive and touchdowns on their last three drives to finish the game.

While sometimes it is the red zone efficiency that many like to focus on, a team can be efficient without being successful. If a team scores a touchdown on their only red zone chance, they are 100% efficient. On Sunday night, the Steelers had a 67% red zone efficiency, but the more important number is that they were able to move the ball into the red zone six times during the game. Working together in a complementary fashion, one of those six trips was set up by the defense. Even though the Steelers only scored touchdowns on four of those six drives, getting the ball into the red zone more often is a key measuring point as the Steelers have not reached the red zone more than 4 times in a game this season.

36%

One statistic where the Steelers came up short was their third down conversions for the game. The Steelers only converted five of their 14 third downs for a 36% conversion rate. But if looking for something to build on, the Steelers improved from their 0 for 6 conversion rate in the first half to go 5 of 8 in the second half. The Steelers three failed third down conversions in the second half led to one field goal and 2 fourth down attempts in which they were successful. As for the defense, they held the Jets to only 3 of 10 third down opportunities for a 30% conversion rate.

4 for 36

The Steelers were able to clean up their penalties much more in Week 7. The Steelers were assessed a total of 4 penalties for 36 yards throughout the game, all of which came in the first half. The Steelers were penalized one yard on the extra point block which they should receive an apology from the NFL this week. The unnecessary roughness penalty on Larry Ogunjobi early in the game for 15 yards would have a mild description of “questionable”. The only other enforced penalties came on holds by Pat Freiermuth and Ryan McCollum. The Steelers were able to overcome Freiermuth’s penalty and score a field goal on that drive. When it came to McCollum, there was also an legal man down field penalty on the same play which would have set the Steelers back regardless. Seeing Steelers play a clean game from the penalty standpoint in the second half was also encouraging.

7:27

With the Pittsburgh Steelers holding onto a 15-point lead with just under eight minutes left to play in the game, they took over on their own 25-yard line after stopping the Jets on fourth down. The Steelers managed to hold the ball for 7:27 of the remaining 7:53 in the game. The drive was 13 plays for 75 yards and ended with a Najee Harris touchdown.

54

The Steelers were once again able to keep an opponent from really getting their running game going. The Jets only had 54 rushing yards on 15 attempts for a 3.6 average. Breece Hall led the way with 38 rushing yards on 12 carries and a touchdown. Of the Steelers 54 rushing yards surrendered, 12 of them were given up on the last play of the game after the Steelers took a commanding 22-point lead and the Jets had to run one play just to run the clock. Even though the Steelers did only give up 54 rushing yards, they did surrender a 57-yard short pass to running back Breece Hall in which he broke a number of tackles and set the Jets up for their second and final score of the game.

1; 8

One thing that was somewhat disappointing for the Steelers defense was their inability to get home on the pass rush and sack Aaron Rodgers. The Steelers only had one sack on the night by Larry Ogunjobi which came on the Jets first possession of the game. The Steelers did manage to get in 8 quarterback hits with 3 coming from Ogunjobi, 2 from T.J. Watt, and 2 from Alex Highsmith. On the other side of the ball, the Steelers only surrendered one sack on the night and gave up 5 quarterback hits.

The most important number of them all, the Steelers were able to add one more digits to their win column for 2024. The Steelers have pushed their record to 5–2 which has them atop the AFC North and can finish Week 7 no worse than a tie after Baltimore plays on Monday night.

So there are some numbers to help put the Steelers Week 7 win in perspective. While some may write off the win being against a 2-4 team, getting it done by 22 points still says a lot.
