Analyzing the Steelers Week 17 win over the Seahawks, by the numbers
The Pittsburgh Steelers took to the field for their third and final west coast trip for the 2023 season. For the second-straight week, the Steelers put at least 30 points on the scoreboard and brought home a victory, keeping their playoff hopes alive through the end of the regular season.
So without further ado, here are some of the numbers involved in the Steelers Week 17 win over the Seahawks.
+1
The Steelers once again came out on the right side of the turnover margin by playing a clean game and having one takeaway. The key moment came in the fourth quarter where the Steelers had yet to have a sack or take away, they did both on the same play where Nick Herbig had the strip sack and fumble recovery which allowed the Steelers to take over in field goal range to push their lead to two scores.
1
The Pittsburgh Steelers only had one punt in the game against the Seahawks which went for 46 yards and was downed inside the 20. It was the first time since Week 11 of the 2021 season against the Los Angeles Chargers where the Steelers only had one punt in the game. Of the Steelers 10 possessions, one ended in a punt, one was a turnover on downs, and two ended the half and the game. The Steelers put points on the board on their other six possessions.
202
For the second time this season, the Pittsburgh Steelers had over 200 rushing yards in the game. The Steelers finished with 202 rushing yards on 46 carries for a 4.4 YPC and three rushing touchdowns. Najee Harris led the way with 122 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns while Jaylen Warren added 75 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.
468
For the second time this season, the Pittsburgh Steelers put up more than 400 yards of offense this time going for 468 yards. It was the most offensive yards the Steelers have had since they put up 553 yards in their Wild Card loss during the 2020 season. This was the most yards the Steelers have gained in a regular season game since Week 7 of the 2018 season against the Denver Broncos.
50%
When looking at the Steelers third and fourth down conversion rate, they were 50% on the day where they converted 8 out of 16 attempts. The Steelers were 46% on third down conversions as they were 6 for 13 and the Steelers were 67% on fourth down as they converted 2 out of 3 tries. As for the defense, they held the Seahawks to only a 33% conversion rate as they were 3 for 9 on third down and did not attempt a fourth down play in the game.

Although the Steelers didn’t have the greatest efficiency when it came to the red zone on Sunday, the fact they had seven trips inside Seattle’s 20-yard line was quite impressive. The Steelers only converted three of the seven trips for touchdowns for a 43% conversion rate, but keep in mind Najee Harris intentionally slid rather than score a touchdown on the Steelers final possession in order to take victory formation which ultimately kept the Steelers under the 50% conversion rate.
10:53
With the Steelers protecting a lead in the fourth quarter, they were able to control the ball and run a lot of the clock. Despite only running eight more plays than the Seahawks (22 to 14), the Steelers possessed the ball for just shy of 11 minutes in the fourth quarter. In order to close out the game, keeping the ball away from the opponent and chewing up the clock goes a long way for a team’s success.
89
This is an interesting number to highlight, but when breaking down it actually goes a long way in explaining the Steelers offensive success. On the day, the Seahawks had 89 total tackles with Devin Bush leading the way with 17 tackles. Why is this important? The Seahawks managed only 37 solo tackles but had 52 assists. With the Steelers only running 71 offensive plays, this goes to show how often it took multiple defenders to bring down a Steelers ball carrier. For comparison sake, the Steelers had 42 tackles in the game with only nine of them being assists and 33 of the solo variety.
4
Despite Mason Rudolph completing 18 of 24 passing attempts for 274 yards, there were only four different Steelers who were targeted in the passing game this week. George Pickens led the way with nine targets where he had seven receptions for 131 yards. Pat Freiermuth, Jaylen Warren, and Diontae Johnson each were targeted four times with Warren and Johnson bringing in all their targets and Freiermuth bringing in three of the four.

The Steelers have now secured their ninth win of the season and have locked in their final position in the AFC North. Although five weeks ago looking at only 9 wins would have been very disappointing, two weeks ago it seemed almost impossible. The Steelers have one more chance to get to double-digit wins on the season and finish the year 5-1 in the AFC North.
So there are some numbers to help put the Steelers Week 17 win in perspective. The Steelers still need help to get into the postseason, but they have bounced back to play a much better brand of football the last two weeks.
