All is quiet on the Steelers front in their search for a new offensive coordinator

Maybe this is the calm before the storm. Maybe the team is just putting together their list of candidates they want to interview for the offensive coordinator opening they have on their coaching staff heading into the 2024 regular season.

Maybe.

While other NFL teams are scheduling interviews and doing their diligence on their vacancies on their coaching staff, all is quiet on the Steelers’ front in their own coaching search. To be fair, the Steelers season ended just under a week ago, so they are likely putting plans in place to execute in the coming weeks. But at the same time, this isn’t breaking news they’ll need a new play caller this offseason.

While the Steelers put together a plan, the criteria Mike Tomlin spoke about during his season-ending press conference Thursday was specific.

  • They need to have play calling experience
  • Wants it to be an outside of the organization hire
  • Offensive Coordinator experience suggested

For those fans who are looking for/hoping the team will dive into the college ranks to promote their next play caller, you have to ask if the candidate you have in mind might even fit the aforementioned criteria.

Something to keep in mind during this process is just because there has been no news of any interviews doesn’t mean the team hasn’t put out their feelers for potential candidates. But it should be noted the majority of the teams who are looking for coaches are also looking for head coaches. Once those head coaching hires are made, typically more and more coordinators become available after they’ve been told the new head coach is bringing in his own personnel.

Will this week ahead at least shine some light on the Steelers’ plans with announced interviews? It’s possible, but if history has been any indicator for the Steelers, they aren’t about to rush to any conclusion. They will do their diligence, and make the decision as they feel it’s appropriate. Even if it might be infuriating to the fan base.

Be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for the rest of the offseason, including the search for their next play caller.
