Alex Highsmith active for Week 5 vs. Baltimore
The Pittsburgh Steelers are now less than 90 minutes away from kickoff in Week 5 of the 2023 NFL season. After two games on the road, the Steelers return to Pittsburgh to face the Baltimore Ravens for a Sunday afternoon AFC North game.
As is always the case, 90 minutes before kickoff is when teams must announce their inactive list for the upcoming game. With 48 players active for each team, the number of players on the inactive list depends on if a team makes any practice squad elevations. With the Steelers elevating two players on Saturday, their inactive list is seven players while the Ravens will have six due to two elevations but only haveing 52 players on the roster due to adding a player to the Reserve/Injured list on Saturday.
New to the 2023 season is a modified return of the “third quarterback rule.” Every NFL team who has a third quarterback on their 53-man roster will include him on their inactive list, but he is designated as a third quarterback and is therefore in uniform in case of injury to the two players ahead of him on the depth chart. But if one of the players is deemed healthy enough to return, the third quarterback goes back to their role on the sideline.
Here are the seven players inactive for the Pittsburgh Steelers in their Week 5 matchup against the Ravens according to Steelers.com.
Steelers Inactives
No. 2 QB Mason Rudolph (3rd QB)
No. 6 P Pressley Harvin III
No. 48 RB Godwin Igwebuike
No. 65 OT Dan Moore Jr.
No. 78 OG James Daniels
No. 88 TE Pat Freiermuth
No. 98 DE DeMarvin Leal
Mason Rudolph is on the list as the Steelers third quarterback and will be in uniform which is technically an upgrade from last season. The only other healthy scratch is running back Godwin Igwebuike who has been inactive for the Steelers all three games since he was signed off the Atlanta Falcons practice squad. With Igwebuike on the sidelines, the Steelers once again decided to go with only two running backs.
Joining these players on the inactive list are the two players ruled out due to injury who also missed last week in punter Pressley Harvin III and guard James Daniels. Brad Wing was elevated from the practice squad to perform the punting duties again today. As for the offensive line, Nate Herbig steps into the starting role for a second consecutive week.
The other three players on the inactive list were all ruled out on Friday due to injury. Tight end Pat Freiermuth will miss the game with a hamstring injury. Earlier this week, the Steelers added tight end Rodney Williams to their 53-man roster from the practice squad in anticipation of Freiermuth being unavailable. Additionally, offensive tackle Dan Moore Jr. will miss the game due to a knee injury and first-round draft pick Broderick Jones will get his first NFL start in his place. The Steelers also elevated an offensive lineman in center Ryan McCollum in order to have eight players with two linemen ruled out due to injury. Finally, defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal is still in the NFL’s concussion protocol and will miss the game. With Leal out, Braden Fehoko will see his first regular season action with the Steelers.
As for the Ravens inactive list, it can be seen below. Players who are active for Baltimore include cornerback Marlon Humphrey, offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley, safety Marcus Williams, and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
