AFC North Recap: The Steelers lead extends to two-games after the Ravens bye

The AFC North was widely considered the toughest division in the NFL heading into the regular season, but there certainly have been some bumps in the road where the division played poorly. Not every AFC North team was in action in Week 14, but the AFC North had games at different times. When all was said and done, the Steelers beat the Browns, and the Bengals beat the Cowboys on Monday Night Football.

Time to take a look at how the AFC North played out in Week 14, the latest standings and the upcoming schedule in Week 15.

Pittsburgh Steelers – 27
Cleveland Browns – 14

The Pittsburgh Steelers were able to claim their 10th win of the season, and in the process they eliminated the Browns from any hopes of a playoff berth. The now 10-3 Steelers won a game which the final score might not indicate just how close the game was in the early portions of the contest. The Steelers were trailing the Browns 7-3 early in the game, but, thanks to some costly mistakes by Cleveland, the Steelers were able to pull away in the second half. This shouldn’t be viewed as a bad win for the Steelers, considering good teams take advantage of the mistakes their opponents make. That’s exactly what the Steelers did on Sunday at Acrisure Stadium.

Cincinnati Bengals – 27
Dallas Cowboys – 20

In a prime time affair on Monday Night Football the Bengals and Cowboys both went head-to-head in a game with both teams clinging to a hope and prayer of making the playoffs. Thanks to a botched special teams play, the Bengals turned it isn’t a Ja’Marr Chase touchdown and they kept their slim playoff hopes alive for another week. The Bengals actually remaining slate of games to finish out the season doesn’t make things easier, but it is possible they could win out. Take a look:

  • vs. CLE
  • vs DEN
  • at PIT

Steelers fans will bemoan me suggesting they win the Week 18 game, but it is a real possibility that game means little to the Steelers in terms of the division and/or playoff seedings. It’s a pipe dream for the Bengals to make the playoffs, but their hopes remain for another week.
