AFC North Recap: The division takes a turn after Week 9

The AFC North was widely considered the toughest division in the NFL heading into the regular season, but there certainly have been some bumps in the road where the division played poorly. Every AFC North team but the Steelers were in action in Week 9, and the AFC North had games all at the same time. When all was said and done, the Ravens beat the Broncos inched them closer to the division lead, but the Browns loss to the Chargers meant they are essentially done with a 2-7 record.

Time to take a look at how the AFC North played out in Week 9, the latest standings and the upcoming schedule in Week 10.

Cincinnati Bengals – 41
Las Vegas Raiders – 24

This game was over well before it started. The Bengals were just too much for the Raiders to handle, and that was even without wide receiver Tee Higgins in the lineup. The Raiders benched Gardner Minshew, who was starting for the injured Aidan O’Connell, and turned to Desmond Ridder. Yes, that Desmond Ridder. As you an imagine, it didn’t play out well for the Raiders, and Joe Burrow dominated the Las Vegas defense on their way to a much-needed win at home.

Baltimore Ravens – 41
Denver Broncos – 10

The Broncos were riding high, no pun intended, after dominated the Panthers in Week 8, but let’s just say the Ravens and the Panthers are on different end of the NFL spectrum when it comes to talent level. The Ravens proved they were on another level compared to Bo Nix and the Broncos. While most expected Nix to struggle, he’s a rookie after all, most expected the vaunted Denver defense to put up more of a fight vs. the Ravens offense. Are Lamar and company unstoppable, or was this a one-off for the Denver defense? Who knows, but Baltimore gets a big win to keep pace with the Steelers in the AFC North race.

Los Angeles Chargers – 27
Cleveland Browns – 10

The shine on Jameis Winston didn’t last long for Browns fans. After he upset the Baltimore Ravens last week he was running for his life and throwing interceptions vs. the Chargers in Week 9. The Chargers sport one of the best defenses in the league, and it was clear early and often the Browns weren’t up to the same standard as an offense. The Browns offensive line couldn’t do much vs. the Chargers, and Justin Herbert and company eventually broke big plays to give them a big win on the road. As for the Browns, don’t be shocked if they continue being sellers at the deadline as they try and recoup some of their losses after the Deshaun Watson fiasco.
