AFC North Recap: Steelers extend division lead after Week 3
The AFC North was widely considered the toughest division in the NFL heading into the regular season, but there certainly have been some bumps in the road where the division played poorly. Every NFL team was in action, obviously, in Week 3, but the AFC North had games on multiple days. When all was said and done, the Steelers were the lone undefeated team through two weeks of action.
Time to take a look at how the AFC North played out in Week 3, the latest standings and the upcoming schedule in Week 4.
Baltimore Ravens – 28
Dallas Cowboys – 25
At one point this game looked to be over, with the Ravens leading 28-6 at one point, but the Cowboys came storming back and almost pulled off a tremendous comeback. The Ravens took their foot off the gas, but still were able to get their first win of the season. Some might have called it a must-win game, but that might be a little premature for a Week 3 contest. Now the Ravens return home for a Sunday night game vs. the Bills. Maybe that was a must-win game after all…
New York Giants – 21
Cleveland Browns – 15
The Giants made the plays necessary, and the Browns didn’t. That might sound cliche, or basic, but there are times when the game is as simple as that. There were times the Browns couldn’t get out of their own way, and the Giants took advantage of their miscues. When you look at games a team “should” win, this home game vs. the Giants would fall into that category. There are no easy games in the NFL, but this might be a game the Browns look back on later in the season and wonder, “What if…”
Pittsburgh Steelers – 20
Los Angeles Chargers – 10
It was strength vs. strength when the rushing attack of the Chargers went against the run defense of the Steelers. Everyone wondered who would win? The answer? The run defense was the dominant winner of the contest and the Steeles won their home opener to advance to 3-0 on the season. Their two-game lead over the Ravens and Browns is significant, and could be extended in Week 4 if the team can win yet another road game vs. the Colts in Week 4. For those who didn’t watch the game Sunday, don’t let the final score fool you, this one could have been 27-10 with one more play.
Washington Commanders – 38
Cincinnati Bengals – 33
Did anyone see the Bengals starting the season 0-3? Me neither. Did anyone see the Commanders go into Cincinnati on Monday Night Football and beat the Bengals? Me neither. Nonetheless, the Bengals have started the season 0-3 and now stare up to every other team in the AFC North. Can the Bengals rebound? Absolutely they can, and they’ve done so many times before in recent memory, but this was a crushing loss to the Bengals who now have to beat the Panthers to get their first win of the season in Week 4. Don’t assume anything in the NFL, especially when talking about the Bengals who were dealt another blow along their offensive line with Trent Brown lost for the year.
