AFC North Recap: Steelers and Ravens on a collision course in Week 11
The AFC North was widely considered the toughest division in the NFL heading into the regular season, but there certainly have been some bumps in the road where the division played poorly. Every AFC North team but the Browns were in action in Week 10, and the AFC North had games at different times. When all was said and done, the Ravens beat the Bengals, keeping them in lock step with the Steelers, but the Steelers win over the Commanders keeps them in 1st place for another week .
Time to take a look at how the AFC North played out in Week 10, the latest standings and the upcoming schedule in Week 11.
Baltimore Ravens – 35
Cincinnati Bengals – 34
The Thursday Night Football matchup didn’t disappoint between two AFC North foes in M&T Bank Stadium in Week 10. This back-and-forth affair had fans sitting on the edge of their seats, but, as is typical NFL fashion, the play of the players wasn’t the narrative leaving the game. No, it was the officiating.
With the Bengals scoring a touchdown with just over 30 seconds left in the game, they elected to go for the two-point conversion, rather than kick a game-tying extra point. The decision made sense for a lot of reasons, but when Joe Burrow dropped back to pass on the conversion attempt several fractions were either missed/ignored.
The most egregious call overlooked was the Ravens defender who hit Burrow in the facemask, causing his helmet to pull down over his eyes. On top of that, an illegal hands to the face and a defensive holding call were all considered non-calls and the incomplete pass meant the Ravens could kneel out the game. A horrible finish to a very entertaining football game.
Pittsburgh Steelers – 28
Washington Commanders – 27
Another entertaining game took place in Washington, and it was another one-point with with many talking more about the officials than the game itself.
For Commanders fans the narrative is all about the 4th down pass to Zach Ertz which was ruled short of the line to gain. Washington faithful swear he had a first down, while Steelers fans decry such theories and suggest the call was made correctly. Steelers fans bemoan yet another missed holding call on T.J. Watt, the most blatant of which happened in the end-zone which would have resulted in a safety.
Either way, the Steelers made just enough plays to claim their fourth straight win, and move their record to 7-2 on the season. What lies ahead? How about a collision course with the Ravens in Week 11 in Pittsburgh.
As Bart Scott once famously said, “Can’t wait!”
