AFC North News and Notes: Browns clinch playoff spot, Steelers remain alive

Each week during the NFL season, I will be running through the top storylines from within the AFC North and giving my brief opinion on each matter that is discussed. Once the season gets into full swing, we oftentimes overlook many prevalent stories around the league, as we narrow our focus solely on our beloved Steelers. Hopefully this weekly piece will provide insight on the important topics in the AFC North and educate each reader on what to expect for each AFC North team moving forward.

With much to discuss and minimal time to discuss it, let’s dive right in!

Ravens Route Dolphins, Clinch Home Field

No game was uglier to watch on Sunday than the utter collapse of the Miami Dolphins, delivered by the Baltimore Ravens. Baltimore dropped 56 on the Dolphins, forcing 3 turnovers and putting up 500 yards of total offense. Lamar Jackson was on cue all afternoon, and Tua Tagovailoa never seemed to get comfortable inside the pocket, forcing dangerous throws into tight windows and taking several uncalculated risks. With a win, the Ravens have now clinched home-field advantage and the number one seed in the AFC, while Miami now needs a win on Sunday night against the Bills just to secure the AFC East.

The Mason Magic Continues

It has been more than just a Christmas miracle for the Pittsburgh Steelers, as Mason Rudolph has taken the reins of this team and leads them into a divisional matchup that could potentially put the Steelers in the playoffs. Improved offensive line play and a two-headed rushing attack have been a major part of the team’s newfound success, but Rudolph has done well not turning the ball over and getting George Pickens more involved in the offense. Both have been huge parts as to why Pittsburgh has been able to overcome a multitude of injuries, specifically at linebacker and safety.

Amongst other headlines, rumors swirling about Kenny Pickett refusing to be the backup have been put to rest, as Pickett denied all rumors and said he will backup Rudolph this Saturday in Baltimore. The quarterback situation in Pittsburgh will definitely be one to monitor this offseason, as none of the current Steelers quarterbacks have proven enough to be entrusted as the full-time starter moving forward. Do not be surprised if the Steelers even consider drafting one in the middle rounds.

Browns Clinch Playoff Spot, Blast Jets

Joe Flacco now has as many touchdowns this season as Kenny Pickett has in his career. The incredible run for Flacco and the Browns is not done yet, as their 37-20 win over the Jets makes them the number five seed in the AFC heading into the playoffs. Cleveland has been led by a strong defense all season, but the offense is looking as good as it has all season with Flacco, who put up another strong performance that was highlighted by an off-platform touchdown throw to Jerome Ford. Cleveland now awaits the winner of the AFC South in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
