A Letter From the Editor: Do you trust the organization to get it right?

“They’re just a quarterback away!”

“This team has some serious work to do this offseason…”

No matter where you stand on the state of the Pittsburgh Steelers as they prepare for the start of the new league year in March, there is work to be done within the organization. The quarterback position certainly needs addressed, but it is far from the only issue facing the team at this juncture.

But that’s not the question here. The question/debate isn’t what they’ll do, but do you trust the Steelers to get it right?

Do you trust Mike Tomlin, Omar Khan, Andy Weidl and Art Rooney II to do what’s necessary to get this team over the hump?

That might be the most difficult discussion to have. Why? Because there are a lot of different facets to this debate.

Mike Tomlin has been at the helm since 2007, and spent the majority of his time with Kevin Colbert as his General Manager (GM). Colbert certainly has the credentials to be in the Hall of Fame one day, but you can’t ignore the last five seasons with the team as more swing-and-misses than home runs. Heck, there were some draft classes where fans would have just taken a few doubles.

Tomlin remains, but Khan and Weidl take over as the front office driving the organizational train. After one full season at the helm fans seem to trust the direction Khan has as the GM of the Steelers. He’s willing to part ways with Colbert’s struggling players, and has shown he is more than capable to make the tough decisions if it means making the roster better and more complete.

But can even Khan and Weidl get the job done if Tomlin and/or Art Rooney II are still the ones making the ultimate decisions on critical moves within the organization?

In my opinion, Khan and Weidl are what give me hope for the Steelers future. They have shown they aren’t just going to be complacent and “run it back”. Instead, they are going to turn over every stone possible to get this team not just to the playoffs, but back to the Super Bowl. Even as much trust as I have in this front office duo, and their teams, I hesitate with the understanding of how the front office is shaped and who ultimately calls the shots.

It’s an imperfect science, running a football team, and the fan base needs to have faith the team will make the necessary moves to get the unit back to the big game. What those moves look like depends on the fan you are talking to, but it ultimately comes down to if they believe the Steelers are trustworthy to get the job done. Plenty will say they aren’t capable, and there is a long resume of reasons why they might struggle to get the team back to the eras when the Steelers were the cream of the crop in the AFC.

Sadly, as fans, we don’t have a say in those decisions, but this offseason it’s worth answering the question if you trust the team to get it right. So, what say you? Do you trust the organization to do the job done? Let us know in the comment section, and I’ll continue to keep the faith the Steelers will get back to prominence once again.
