A Letter From the Editor: As always, no news is good news this time of year
While some might suggest the dog days of summer are difficult, they are some of my favorite days. Sure, as a content creator things can become challenging to find new talking points to discuss until news starts up again with training camp, but this time of the calendar year should be the calm before the storm.
Notice the key word there is “should”.
The age-old saying “no news is good news” certainly rings true for life in the NFL.
There are outlier stories during this time which could be viewed as positive. Things like contract extensions, trades and even the occasional accolade to discuss. But for the vast majority of news coming out at this time, it’s negative.
Just this past week you saw news of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott being seen in a walking boot. Not exactly a great look prior to the team starting the new season at training camp. Sure, he’ll likely be fine, but not ideal for a quarterback entering a contract year.
Players like former Steelers draft pick Isaiah Buggs have been arrested for off-field incidents. While some of these cases are dismissed or settled out of court, it certainly is a headache for the organization, and the player.
Most recently was the news of Minnesota Vikings rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson being killed early Saturday morning in an accident in Maryland. That is by far the worst news any organization could ever hear.
All of these stories, while some are more tragic and dire than others, can cast a cloud over an organization. In fact, some stories make you not even consider football, or a team, and instead have you focus on the fact there is a very real human element to this game…one which supersedes the fact we are ultimately talking about a game, or entertainment. The fact a young man lost his life in a car accident over the weekend puts things into perspective.
However, for the Steelers, the duration between mandatory minicamp and training camp thus far has been silent. And I mean silent. Unless you consider Brandon Aiyuk going on The Pivot podcast to talk about his situation with the 49ers as news, the Steelers have epitomized the “no news is good news” theory this offseason.
And I’m thankful for that.
As I stated earlier, I love these weeks before training camp starts. I enjoy the warmth of the sun, the time on the golf course, and time with the family. All of it is an important time of the year, and helps set up the upcoming season. Yes, even people like me have to do some preparation for the upcoming season. This time is invaluable for those preparations.
The majority of the fan base has been clamoring for big news since just before the draft. In some instances, mainly the quarterback position, the news has come to fruition. In other areas, mainly wide receiver, the news hasn’t arrived. Will things change? It’s possible, but it doesn’t seem likely before the team reports to Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA for training camp on July 24th.
No news is good news, and that means that as of right now the Steelers are brimming with good news.
Note: I just knocked on wood for anyone out there who is superstitious…
