A fight broke out at Steelers training camp for the first time ever

A huge fight broke out at Steelers training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa., on Wednesday afternoon, and I don’t know about you, but it left me shocked and speechless (speechless until this article, of course).

Evidently, linebacker Elandon Roberts, who arrived at training camp dressed in just overalls and a cowboy hat, smacked quarterback Justin Fields after he escaped from the pocket and ran for a few yards. (Fields likes to bowl, btw. I know this has nothing to do with anything, but he was at my bowling alley a few months ago.) Guard Mason McCormick, a rookie fourth-round pick from South Dakota State who arrived at training camp while wearing a blue collar and carrying a lunch pale (I believe this is mandatory when you’re a fourth-round offensive lineman from South Dakota State), immediately defended his quarterback by hitting Roberts quite hard after the play.

This predictably started the huge fight I previously mentioned. Seemingly dozens of Steelers players joined in as offensive guys battled defensive guys. Rookies battled veterans. Fringe roster players fought guys who likely knew they already had the team made no matter what. Joey Porter Jr. even used his unpadded fist to sucker punch someone’s helmet.

It was ugly and scary. It was also quite entertaining, as evidenced by all of the videos posted on social media complete with audio from fans in attendance who said things like, “Oh, s**t!” and “I started recording at the perfect time!”

Why did Roberts hit Fields after the play? Did he forget it was training camp? Did Russell Wilson put a bounty on Fields?

Why did McCormick take offense to this? Was he trying to defend his quarterback? Was he trying to prove to his veteran teammates that he wasn’t going to take crap from anyone?  Being a rookie and all, was McCormick just sick of taking crap from the veterans and being forced to do demeaning chores like, say, walking across the hot Saint Vincent campus every afternoon to pick up their Uber Eats orders? (You know delivery drivers can’t take these orders directly to the dorm rooms, and those soft drink containers are quite awkward to carry due to the flawed design.)

At any rate, this fight was the talk of the day on radio stations like 93.7 The Fan. Why was it the talk? Because it was the first time a fight like this had ever happened at Steelers training camp…

OK, I’m kidding. My tongue was firmly in my cheek as I wrote those previous paragraphs. I was just trying to get a rise out of you, you know, for kicks and giggles.

Fights like the one on Wednesday occur every summer at Steelers training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. Hell, they even happened when Bill Cowher was the head coach, which is weird since all of those social media memes seem to indicate he was the toughest guy since sliced bread.

So, why did the media make such a huge deal out of Wednesday’s Steelers brawl? Probably because we like to act like anything that happens is the first time it has ever happened. Thankfully, the local beat reporters appeared on The Fan to remind us that fights occur annually at camp. My favorite part of Wednesday’s fight coverage was when one of the beat reporters–it may have been Mark Kaboly, but it could have been Ray Fittapaldo–said, “This is the time when fights normally break out at camp. It’s hot, and these guys have been going at one another for a while.”

Camp just started last week! The first padded practice was on Tuesday!

Anyway, Wednesday’s Steelers training camp brawl was either a sign that these guys hate one another or that they’re becoming tougher and meaner. Head coach Mike Tomlin is either losing the team or is making it tougher and meaner. Either the offense has the utmost respect for Fields and will run through a brick wall for him or the defense doesn’t respect Fields at all.

Thankfully, we have the Pirates to distract us from this Steelers coverage. Whoops, they’re already drawing down on their trade-deadline approval rating by blowing four-run leads against the Astros.

Speaking of things that happen every summer…

Traditionally, the start of Steelers training camp marks the end of the Pirates season, but the Bucs are so good this year that they made us wait until the second week and first ever fight.
