8 players mentioned by Mike Tomlin following Day 2 of Minicamp on Wednesday

The 2024 offseason is rolling on! After teams have set their 90-man rosters ahead of the six-week hiatus before training camp, the Steelers were on the field for team activities for the final week of offseason activities in the form of mandatory minicamp. After hearing from him following Day 1 on Tuesday, Tomlin spoke to the media to answer questions again on Wednesday. With plenty of questions asked by those in attendance, it is once again time for a players mentioned article. Remember these are current members of the Pittsburgh Steelers where a specific question was asked during the Q&A period.

Cole Holcomb

Coach Tomlin was asked if Cole Holcomb is on track to do some work at training camp.

“Oh, I’m sure he is. You know, I don’t have a lot of details about the specifics of it. But at every checkpoint, I think the experts are comfortable with his progress. And I know he’s working extremely hard.”

Justin Fields

Coach Tomlin was asked what Justin Fields is showing him whether it be leadership or on the field.

“You know, I don’t know that I’m looking right now. You know, it’s about the giving and receiving of information and teaching guys how we go about business and the things that we value. And so I’m making a conscious effort not to, you know, get into the evaluation component too much but obviously he’s done a really good job, doing the things that come with his position to leadership things formally and informally. I’ve been pleased in general with his progress, but it’s just that I’m not in that mindset.”

Najee Harris & Cam Heyward

Coach Tomlin was asked about Najee Harris not being a full participant on Wednesday, if he is banged up, and if he will be good to go by training camp. In his response, Coach Tomlin also mentioned Cam Heyward.

“Not anything that’s going tobe an issue whatsoever regarding health. You guys know my approach man, Cam Heyward didn’t take any snaps today either, is another example of it. I know a lot about some of those guys. I know less about some of these others. And so, I like to focus my energies on those that are working and not those that are moving out of the way at times to see others.”

Minkah Fitzpatrick

On Tuesday, Minkah Fitzpatrick mentioned he would like to get back to playing “Minkah ball“ this season. Coach Tomlin was asked what “Minkah ball“ means to him.

“I’m not worried about “Minkah ball”, to be quite honest with you. It’s just about availability. We get him in the helmet consistently. Those plays that we’ve known him to make and have come to appreciate will be there.”

Keeanu Benton

Coach Tomlin was asked what areas it is reasonable to expect more from Keeanu Benton and how he can help the whole team concept.

“All areas, you know, to be quite honest with you. We don’t isolate that expectation in any certain area. They’ve been a lap around the track, they know what comes ahead, the schedule, the demands of the job, the rigors of the job, etc. It’s reasonable to expect them to be more acclimated this time around and show quality progress in all areas.”

Cam Sutton

Coach Tomlin was asked if Cam Sutton has picked up where he left off from his previous time in Pittsburgh.

“Very beginning stages, but he has been a quick study, but we knew that about him. He was a quick study when he was here. I’m not surprised that he’s able to get on the moving train and execute defense. No, not at all.”

Cordarrelle Patterson

Coach Tomlin was asked if he has been able to glean anything from watching the new kickoff rules being implemented in practice. In his response, he mentioned Cordarrelle Patterson.

“I know I’m glad [Cordarrelle] Patterson’s here. That’s about all I can see at this point.”
