Steel Curtain Network: A Pittsburgh Steelers podcast

5 storylines Steelers fans will hopefully soon forget

On the most recent episode of The Scho Bro Show podcast, Big Bro Scho and I looked at five storylines Steelers fans will soon forget. The idea of forgettable storylines is how things change where some of the Steelers biggest issues can turn into nothing very quickly.

For a recent example, after the Steelers released center Mason Cole it appeared their biggest issue was not having a center on the roster. After not adding one in free agency, it was the Steelers biggest story at the time leading up to the 2024 NFL draft. Once the Steelers selected Zach Frazier in the second round, there was no longer the same concern of the Steelers not having a center.

Going back even farther, a huge storyline during 2021 training camp was the “hold in” by T.J. Watt. As the two sides worked through negotiations for the entire preseason, it was a huge story both in Pittsburgh and nationally. But after T.J. Watt signed his new deal and showed no rust during Week 1, the issue was basically forgotten.

With these types of stories in mind, Big Bro Scho and I each gave our top five lists of stories that will soon be forgotten by Steelers fans. For Rich’s list, he kept his items much like a headline.

Big Bro Scho’s List:

5- Pickett to Pickens
4- Who B WR2?
3- Blame Canada
2- Cam to Cleveland
1- Coach Tomlin’s Future

Of these five items, three of them did not appear on my list. Big Bro went with “Pickets to Pickens” as being a storyline fans will soon forget if George Pickens can establish a connection with the Steelers new quarterback. The “Blame Canada” storyline was about the Steelers offense hopefully making fans forget how bad things were last season offensively. On top of his list, Big Bro dipped into recent news because now that Coach Tomlin has signed his extension, the story of him being potentially on the hot seat or the Steelers letting him go is no longer a viable option.

Before diving into the rest of his list, let’s check out my top five.

Dave’s List:

5- No WR2
4- Spending so little money on offense
3- Will Cam finish with the Steelers?
2- Wilson or Fields as QB1?
1- No playoff wins since 2016

Both of us talked about the storyline of the Steelers number two wide receiver. Whether it be which player ends up filling the role or saying there isn’t one on the team, hopefully this situation is remedied sooner than later. Exactly how it’s going to be solved is open for debate as it could be fulfilled via trade, a player already on the roster, or in a variety of creative ways.

The other item on our lists that were in common was about Cam Heyward’s future. While there’s talk now with him mentioning the Cleveland Browns or how much he has left in the tank, this storyline will hopefully be remedied in the coming weeks.

As for the other items on my list, I brought up the narrative of the Steelers not spending enough money on offense. If the offense is capable, this should be insignificant. Another story I hope is forgettable has to do with the quarterback position and who is going to be the starter this year for the Steelers. As time goes on, this should not be dominating the headlines if all goes well.

Finally, my top storyline I hope Steelers fans can soon forget is the fact that they have not won a playoff game since the 2016 season. In order to forget this storyline, the Steelers have get over the hump and get a postseason victory. Hopefully, this happens as soon as possible.

So what do you think? What do you think is a storyline Steelers fans will soon be able to forget? Make sure you leave your thoughts in the comments.
