5 Steelers who could earn their first Pro Bowl in 2024
On the most recent episode of the Scho Bro Show podcast, we each gave our list of five players on the Steelers roster who could earn their first Pro Bowl selectiopn this season. Before looking at who all could receive the honor, we made sure to list the players on the Steelers roster who have already been selected to the Pro Bowl.
Surprisingly, the Steelers have as many offensive players who have made the Pro Bowl as they do special teams players. Quarterback Russell Wilson and running back Najee Harris are the members of the Steelers offensive unit who have previously made the Pro Bowl. Chris Boswell and special teamer Miles Killebrew are also former Pro Bowlers. When it comes to the defense, players who have made the Pro Bowl in the past are Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt, Patrick Queen, and Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Now that the formalities are out of the way, it’s time to look at the players Big Bro Scho and I chose who are most likely to earn their first Pro Bowl this season. The first two players on each of our lists were different from what the others chose but were selected towards the bottom of the list for similar reasons. Our top three players were both the same, although not in the same order, while our top player on the list was the same for both of us.
Without further here are our individual lists:
Big Bro Scho
5. Broderick Jones
4. Alex Highsmith
3. George Pickens
2. Keeanu Benton
1. Joey Porter Jr.
Dave
5. Pat Freiermuth
4. Isaac Seumalo
3. Keeanu Benton
2. George Pickens
1. Joey Porter Jr.
We both had an offensive lineman in the top five towards the bottom of our list. Rich decided to go with the up-and-coming Broderick Jones as someone who could take a step and earn the recognition this year. I decided to go with the best offensive lineman the Steelers had last year Isaac Seumalo.
Our other choices that we weren’t in the top three were players who would both need to put up better numbers this season, but also have a tough road based on other players at their position within the conference. Big Bro’s selection of Alex Highsmith goes to show the quality of player he is, but having T.J. Watt on his own team, let alone a plethora of quality pass rushers in the AFC, could make being one of the top edge rushers a tough task. With my selection of Pat Freiermuth, even if he has improved statistics in a new offensive system, it could be difficult to knock off some of the top tight ends in the AFC.
The next two selections for both of us were George Pickens and Keeanu Benton, but not in the same order. Both of us are very high on Benton taking a huge step in his second season, and Rich took pride in the fact that he had Benton higher than me. The reason I chose George Pickens as the second-highest section is, based on the Steelers current roster, Pickens will likely have the greatest opportunity to show his superstardom this season.
When it came to the top spot on the list, we both agreed that Joey Porter Jr. is a player who very well could achieve his first Pro Bowl in 2024. Having the name recognition based on being a finalist for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year last season, what Porter brings to the Steelers defense has already been noticed around the NFL. While I would be satisfied with Porter having the same season that he did his rookie year but simply for all 17 games, if Porter shows improvement over last year‘s campaign he would have to be in the Pro Bowl discussion.
So there are our choices for the top five players on the Steelers roster who could make their first Pro Bowl this year. How did we do? What would be the order of your top five? Make sure to leave your thoughts in the comments below.
