5 players ruled out for the Steelers Week 8 game against the New York Giants

The Pittsburgh Steelers are moving along through the 2024 NFL season and are back home for another prime time night matchup, this time against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. As the Steelers took the practice field for their final day in preparation for the Giants, there were five players who did not participate while two were limited. In the final injury report of the week courtesy of the Steelers PR Department, five players have been ruled out while one is doubtful for Monday night’s game.

Note: On Steelers.com they have omitted Najee Harris who did not practice on Saturday as Not Injury Related (NIR) due to rest. I have included him where he should be.

In his press conference on Tuesday, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin did not rule out either player, but spoke as if Nick Herbig and Zach Frazier would not likely be available this week. Missing the last two games, linebacker Nick Herbig is continuing to deal with a hamstring. As for center Zach Frazier, he missed the last game with an ankle injury. As expected, neither of these players practiced all week and have been ruled out.

Two players who missed the Steelers last game due to injury but were potentially coming back are Cordarrelle Patterson and Damontae Kazee. On Thursday, Kazee was back at a full participant with his ankle injury while Patterson was limited in his first action back from hurting his ankle against the Colts. On Friday and Saturday, both players kept the same status with Kazee as a full participant and Patterson as limited. As for their game status. Kazee carries none while Patterson is listed as doubtful.

Another player who missed last week’s game but was deemed to be more about missing practice time than the injury itself was rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson. On Thursday, Wilson did not participate in practice due to his hamstring injury which he reportedly aggravated on Wednesday. Friday and Saturday brought more days with no practice and has Roman Wilson ruled out for Monday night. The bigger question now is if he will land on the Reserve/Injured List (IR).

Another player who did not practice on Thursday was DeShon Elliott with a back injury. While this was worrisome to see at first, Elliott was back on the practice field as a limited participant on Friday. Saturday brought a full practice for Elliot and he has no injury designation.

Two players who are coming back from the Reserve/Injured List and are within their 21-day window are linebacker Tyler Matakevich, who just rejoined the Steelers for practice on Thursday, and Dylan Cook, who returned last week. On Thursday, Matakevich was a limited participant while Cook was a full participant. Friday and Saturday saw both players with the same status as Thursday. Instead of bringing either player back from IR, both have been ruled out for this week and are still not on the 53-man roster.

After missing a large portion of the Steelers Week 7 game against the New York Jets, Donte Jackson is listed on the injured report with his shoulder injury. But on Thursday and Friday, Jackson was a full participant. Saturday brought another full practice and Jackson is good to go for Week 8.

A previously unknown injury which showed up on the list was defensive tackle Keeanu Benton who is dealing with a calf injury. On Thursday, Benton was limited. Friday and Saturday saw Benton as a full participant and he has no injury status.

A new name on Friday was guard Isaac Seumalo who was given the day off for rest. Seumalo was back to full on Saturday is good to go for Monday night.

Cam Heyward who got the day off on Thursday for rest. Heyward typically receives Thursdays off, and sometimes even Wednesdays, before returning to practice for the week. With the Steelers having an extra day of practice this week, Heyward got an extra day off on Friday. Saturday saw Heyward back on the field and ready to go for Monday.

Two new names appeared on the list Saturday. Running back Najee Harris was given the day off to rest while tight end MyCole Pruitt missed Saturday’s practice due to his knee injury. Neither player has an injury designation for Week 8.

As for the Giants injury report, it can be seen below courtesy of Steelers.com.

Note: The Steelers cut and paste component has failed again as Dexter Lawrence is once again listed as “Hip” instead of his status. (The Giants have him listed as limited but with no injury designation for the game.)
