4 players mentioned by Mike Tomlin following Tuesday’s training camp practice

The Pittsburgh Steelers took to the practice field again at St. Vincent College for training camp on Tuesday following a day off and for the first time in pads. Following practice, head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media about their day on the field. Since he was asked about a few players, I am excited to continue the players mentioned article at Steel Curtain Network for the 2024 season! Remember these are supposed players where a specific question was asked during the Q&A period. Since there were not many questions about specific players, excerpts from Coach Tomlin’s opening statement will also be used.

Roman Wilson

After being carted off during practice, Coach Tomlin gave an update on rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson during his opening statement.

“It was unfortunate that we had an injury today. Roman [Wilson] hurt his ankle on a tackle, and so we’ll have more information regarding the length of his status in terms of how long he might be out.”

Rodney Williams

Bringing up other injuries, Coach Tomlin gave any available information about tight end Rodney Williams who went down during practice over the weekend.

“Nothing new to mention with Rodney Williams. He’s still out with that shoulder. It’s probably days, but we’ll see. We’ll keep monitoring it. I know he’s chomping at the bit to get back into the fold. There’s a finite amount of work out here, man. It’s a limited opportunity in today’s NFL, and so availability is big. Guys have to get back, guys have to stay up. It’s just a component of this time of year as they work to state a case for themselves and sort themselves out.”

Russell Wilson

In his opening statement, Coach Tomlin gave an update on Russell Wilson participating more in practice.

“‘Russ’ [Russell Wilson] getting back to action today. We had him in the helmet, he played some seven-on-seven. Got a little 11-on-11 work, not a lot. We’ll keep progressing with that throughout the week and moving forward, obviously with the mindset of ‘no steps backwards’ as we do so.”

Coach Tomlin was asked about who dictates how much Russell Wilson practices.

“I’m slowing down the progress and I think I’ve been pretty clear with you guys about that.”

In a later question, Coach Tomlion was asked if the field conditions, because it was raining during practice, limited the reps for Wilson.

“No.”

Justin Fields

Coach Tomlin was asked what he learned about Justin Fields during the first padded practice that he hadn’t seen from him previously.

“I don’t know that attire created any new learning from a quarterback perspective in terms of evaluating them. He’s been doing a really good job, and it continued today.”
